Hi folks, Looking for a 29er steel hardtail frame with interchangeable dropsouts to run gears or single speed, capable of running a 140mm front fork, apart from the On-one Inbred and the Orange P7 what are my other choices? Cheers

Thanks bedmaker - need L/XL - I'm 6' 4" and thinking about frame only (so I can build bespoke)

If you want to run a shorter fork a singular swift would be very easy to change set up with the EBB

On-one do a 29er but think it's max 120. Orange have not released a 29er hardtail yet (proto is alu?).

Your only current choices are the Kona Honzo, Canfield Nimble 9 or 2SoulsCyles SlimJim.

Unless they've changed the angles, I wouldn't want an Inbred at 140mm, its was a bit too much at 120mm & I don't think On-One recomend it either.
And isn't the P7 a 26" wheel ?

Canfield Nimble 9 specs 5" fork & has sliding drops with a mech hanger.

Do you really want an 140mm front fork? I can't imagine needing more than 120mm on a 29er hardtail (though I suppose it depends where you ride).

I would imagine that most 140mm forks are tapered too which will limit your choice.

There is also Cotic Solaris/Simple which will run 120mm - either geared or ss though.

Id get something like this:

The narrow handle bars make them ideal for going round in circles which appears to be what you enjoy

Cotic Solaris is fantastic and looks great - rides like a Soul but with more grip despite less travel (120mm)

Chromag Surface should be on the list also.

2souls Slim Jim matches your criteria exactly.

The 140mm fork makes it so versatile however as others have said, you need to evaluate if you're going to be riding in conditions that require that much travel.

I'd have said that a Pipedream Shookum fits the bill if you limit yourself to a 130mm fork. It's 853 and has sliding dropouts (Paragon style). It's also meant to be belt drive compatible. I think that essentially it's a 29er version of their Sirius.

The are no pics. on the Pipedream site yet, although I think that they're taking pre-orders but I assume it's an 853 version (plus belt drive capacity) of the ti. Shookum.

I'm also 6'4" and have just finished building a bespoke DeKerf 29er. Rigid for now but will fit a 100mm (plenty travel imho) when my bike fund recovers. Only ridden it a couple times but the fit and feel is the best I've ever had on a bike. There's a lot of hype around DeKerf but the workmanship is quite nearly enough to justify it.

Second Phatman's note of the Chromag Surface. They're supposedly being made by DeKerf.

Chas Roberts might make a variation on the DOGSBOLX if you want to stay British.

The Chromag & Solaris don't have sliding dropouts or EBB though.

Bedmaker - selling the Honzo already?? Why?

My Honzo is an XL and i love it. 120mm upfront seems more than enough but it can take 140 if you want it to.

Not light by any stretch of the imagination but then not many XL steel frames are unless you go silly money. Saying that though, mine weighs in at 30lbs with 1x10 set up which is pretty much what most of my bikes end up weighing.

Only potential downside to the Honzo is the lack of front mech compatability if you fancy a granny ring.

Good point, but my Dekerf does, another reason to go bespoke.

MrTall, I've got a Tallboy LTc on order and once it comes I will sell the Honzo as the stuff I'd use them both for is too similar.
My other bike will hopefully then be the custom steel frame I have been planning for ages - almost the same as the honzo except a slightly steeper HA and lighter tubeset.

I'd be very tempted by a highball too after demoing one yesterday, a really fun bike and great for hikeabike stuff as it is so light.
