As title he is after something for general riding (canal paths etc)he has £300 quid max, in size m.
Not fussed on make but would be nice to have one that doesn't weigh a ton.

GT avalanche 3.0? retail at £300 for V-brake model, disc should be £329 but haggle for a one off payment(no finance etc.) and you'll get one around £300.

OK I am biased somewhat as I have one (08 model) but what about the Commencal Normal. The v brake version (09 model) is up at Merlin for £250 with delivery about £30.
Real Cycles do a price match scheme and free delivery too.

Gt Avl. is good too.
Both can be converted to road use too.
