[Closed] Reccommend a tool box?

It's my birthday soon.

That's a lie, but I guess christmas is on the way.

My old faithful plastic draper toolbox from like 2004 when I was a teen has popped its clogs. It's held all my mtb, road and even most of my smaller car tools for ages.

I want a nice portable box that could fit in the back of a car/van (as I move a lot with work), but that's big enough for pretty much all bike tools (save, say a facing and pressing set) with spaces for things like spare links, valves, hub adapters, e.t.c e.t.c.

What have you got?

Oh and for what its worth - I have pretty much every tool I could ever want at this point so I don't need pre-filled boxes.

I mean, apart from maybe a BB facing kit but I'm sure I'll survive.

I use a Facom tote bag (T14)

Larger ones are available.

I like the open tote style especially if you are throwing in heavier tools. For work, I use a Makita bucket tote, best tool carrier/bin ever 🙂 You can get bigger variants to go over 5 gallon tubs too.

I work in the street so having a bucket style is great as it keeps my small tools separate from the larger ones, I can put bulky items in the middle, and carry the rubbish back afterwards. I can also hang it up when I'm working in manholes and its easier to pass down a ladder than a long toolbox.

All the bike tools are in this at the moment:

Only slight advantage over several similar ones is that there are hidden handles at each end, so you can pick it up without having to shut the lid. Useful feature every blue moon.

I definitely need some new tool storage ideas too.

I currently have three "portable" tool boxes, most of the useful bike tools live in a plastic "hobby box" from clas ohlson, with miscellaneous bolts, washers, chain links and hex keys in the top compartments for easy access. It's handy as a pickup and go box everything else is a shambles though...

The bulky, less frequently used bike tools, go in an old johnsons baby kit box (you get given these when you procreate). My cordless drill and related stuff live I a battered old aluminium camera case.

And then there's the shadow board...

+1 for the facom bag I've had one for 6yrs now been dragged around the side of motorways and thrown from pillar to post in the back of the breakdown van and nothings ripped or worn through plenty of pockets and t key / screw driver holders in one of the end pieces not cheap but worth it

Got that Aldi equivalent of the Facom bag. All the bike tools are in it in the garage and then just lift it across to the camper when we go away. Great bit of kit

Totes are great for working out of, but not so good for storing, for what you describe I'd want a solid closing box for when it falls over in the boot.

TBH size/shape is as important as anything else, I use some cheap Stanley that I wouldn't usually give the time of day, but it fits perfectly into the space behind the front seat. And it's alright, it's not great but it works fine.

I like the more traditional type.

I have this which appears indestructible without being 10 million tons in weight, think I have the longer version. Can sit/stand on it and it has inbuilt right angle cuttery thing too.

Quick PSA:

Just picked up the obligatory leaflet in Aldi, they're flogging their "workzone" branded 'DIY Tote Bag' this Sunday for £17...

Might be an option.
