or a way of increasing run time using an enhanced [self contained ] battery
I've had a look at all [most ] of the commuting type cameras available -they all seem to offer 90-120 minutes recording time-presumably less in colder weather .
I'd like to be able to record my road rides, after a lot of v close passes recently
many thanks for any help

Fly 12 on low flashing I get more than three hours of recording. Even longer with no light. It's a bit of a lump.
Fly12 should be good for much longer than that. Someone has one for sale in the classifieds forum. And my review is on here somewhere.
many thanks
I was looking for a standalone camera, perhaps a little less weighty
is there a longer life battery in the same form factor as [say] a go pro or dazzne?
The Fly12 is a standalone camera. Its size and weight is largely due to the battery capacity; you'll struggle to find something small and light which has a long battery life, because physics 😉
GoPro with a battery bacpac? It seems there isn't a battery bacpac for the Hero 5, but you could find a cheap Hero 3 or Hero 4.
Should last about 3 hours - will depend on what model, and what settings and resolution you are using. Make sure wifi is switched off.
Roadhawk.
They do specific ones for cycling/biking and can be increased with any battery pack or the specific wp one.
Full timestamp, etc so credible for submission too in the event of any incident.
what about the drift ghost
does anyone have experience of this?
ideally I'd like an up front combine garmin/camera mount
I'm planning on adding an external battery pack to my GoPro clone - from my testing it seems any standard USB battery pack will work, and you don't need one that big to get 3-4 hour run times.
that sounds interesting aracer
how do you manage 3-4 hours-is it by reducing video record definition e.g. 1080 to 720?
is it a Gitup camera?
It's a xiaomi yi - reducing quality helps improve run time, but only up to about an hour and a half. The point is you plug an external battery pack to the charging port - I'm not sure if that was what you were after, but it's an easy solution for longer runtime with a standard camera.
thanks aracer
where did you buy it from & for how much please?
does it fit in e.g. standard gopro case etc?
Fly 12 does looping too, so won't stop recording if you fill the card. I've run mine for about three hours on night rides, but I've never run it as camera only, so can't give you a definitive figure. It does have few quirks though - like trying to sync Strava metrics (gave up).
Has four modes and three intensities so I selected:
Hi Constant
Med Intermittent
Low Flash
Off
The app controller is pretty good, and you can review videos on the fly using its WiFi.
I'd suggest a fly12 too. I've got a Gopro session which will do 2 hours maybe a smidge more, but it's a pain in the arse for daily use.
GArmin VirbX also does all the metrics and will link up to other Garmins, Strava, etc.
my concern with the fly6 is that it seems to have seat post mounting only
I prefer to mount my light on the seat stay ideally
We seem to have jumped from the 12 to the 6 🙂
The Fly12 will roll for about 8 hours with the light off IME. The Fly6 seems to run for a broadly similar time. Both can be charged whilst in use if you need to go longer. And yes, the Fly6 is seatpost mounted only unless you bodge something, but I thought we were looking for a handlebar camera…
My only criticism of the Fly12 is its app. I've found the iOS one is unreliable, and when it does manage to connect to the camera it's a pig to use. And then as far as the Android one is concerned I've never managed to get it to connect to the camera at all. Fundamentally, though, you still have the option to whip the card out and stick it in a computer just as with any other camera. It's very easy to live with: you just hold the button for a couple of seconds when you start your ride and then you can completely forget about it.

We seem to have jumped from the 12 to the 6
true-I'm looking for a long-lasting light[er] camera-ideally forward facing to record any stationary incidents ideally
thanks for all inputs thus far
aracer-
it's a xiaomi yi
what mount do you use?
do use any kind of cover or protection & if so , does it interfere with sound quality ?
I've listened looked & read some more- thanks for all offerings so far
I think that my choice is a refurb GP hero 3+ or 4 with a battery pack or
a xaomi yi with the 2400 battery
does anyone have experience of either of these please?
cheers

Check out the ion pro range.cheap but very gòod.just put one on my mtb.get around two hours recording and the easy on off recording comes in handy.
I've been using a xaiomi yi for a few yrs on and off and for the the money I'm not complaining.
Battery life is useable if you are selective with recording and don't run the WiFi connection when you don't need it.
