I have a Roval rear wheel on my bike and its got quite a bit of side to side play, I presume the bearings need changing?

Can anyone tell me what bearings it uses and how to remove the freehub from the wheel?

Its a 142mm axle and the wheels were off a Enduro.

Yes, bearings. Have done a fair few of these and you often can't even feel the play in the bearings themselves.

No idea on the bearings - I'd usually knock 'em out and measure them to be sure. As a note, through-axle bearings can be a bugger to remove because there's no axle to bash out and you often can't get a drift onto the inner edge of the bearing. I now use [url= http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131982076375 ]one of these[/url] to drift out one side, and a regular drift on the other.

The freehub should just pull out of the hub once the cassette is removed. It might take a fair bit of force to pop the seals out though. Plenty of videos on these, which I think are DT Swiss hubs.

Thanks. Struggling to get the freehub off to be honest.
Do the end caps need to be removed as well or should I just be able to pull the lot off once the cassette is removed?

Just managed to get the freehub off, I had to unscrew the axle from the non-drive side then it came out as one unit.
Now I am left with the bearing, any tips on how to get that out?

Its seated just behind the ridged inner section..

Glad to hear it! Through axle bearings are a pain without some sort of bearing puller or expander (the link in my original post) as you need to get a drift in from the other side, but often you can't actually get to the edge of the bearing to get any purchase to knock it out.

If you can get an edge for a drift, then carefully warm the outer shell of the hub (I like boiling water for this as 100C is a good, safe maximum temperature) and then hopefully the bearing will come out reasonably easily.

If you can't get an edge (and this seems quite common) then you might need an expanding puller to remove it.

You sure it's the bearings?

My Roval hub rear hub has cartridge bearings but is threaded like cup and cone. Not like the Hope hubs I had previously at all, you can adjust the preload and dial out any side to side play.

I dismantled it and checked the bearings, all fine.

It's likely bearings but my last (handbuilt) wheel had the same problem and it turned out to be some seriously loose spokes - may also be worth checking.

Thanks guys, looks like it maybe a job for my LBS to sort out.
99% sure it's bearings, when holding the axle at either end you could visually see it going side to side by a few mm.

I will message my LBS and see what they charge to fit a new one, I have ordered the bearing now as well so just labor to pay hopefully.

+1 Check that the end caps are done up pretty tight. If you didn't need a spanner to remove them, then I would strongly suspect that they were loose.

when holding the axle at either end you could visually see it going side to side by a few mm.

^That also sounds like the end-caps loose. If your bearings were far enough gone for that amount of play, it would be *very* obvious just by wiggling the inner race now that you have the axle out. Unless they are noticeably loose, I'd put the axle back in and tighten the end caps a bit more.
