Off to Spain with my Kona Process in May , thought it might be wise to pack a spare hanger . Seems they are around £20 !!!! Jeez seriously for a tiny bit of metal ??? Seems on Evil Bay they start from less than a tenner are they any good ? Mate wanted one for his Process as well but at that price might take a chance and buy one between us !

I use these guys, quality products, and well worth paying a wee bit more than the stuff made of cheese

Mates Marin or whyte, cant remember was something like £80 when he broke it. He said , sod buying a spare, a train fare back would be cheaper than the spare one.

Not significantly cheaper on hibike (20 EUR), assuming it is the "Type TT":

If you buy 3 at goldtec and if you ask nicely you can have em for £15 each, you'll have to pop in or phone up though. I didn't tell you though right *taps nose*

Count yourself lucky you don't have an 09 intense slope style. £130 when the bike was new out... Was basically the whole, pair of cnc'd, dropouts though.

They are a sacrificial part so are meant to be made from cheese. Otherwise the expensive mech or worse the frame could get damaged from an impact.

Be nice if they were made from hard cheese rather than cottage cheese.

They are a total rip off. A small piece of metal for £20!

There's cheese and then there's cheese- MC kindly made me an upgraded hanger for mine as the standard one is soft as shite, it still did the job and snapped off when I needed it to, it just didn't snap and bend when I didn't.

Sacrificial parts should be commonplace and cheap, mech hangers generally fail on both counts, there's 40 million different ones to choose from and some of them cost a fortune.

£30 odd quid for my Covert, very chunky though so won't snap easily. As long as it still goes before the frame or mech

Isn't this part of the idea behind the new direct mount rear mech? Then shimano can have the monopoly on an overpriced tiny piece of metal with limited availability.

It's laughable when Wiggle ( I think) say it's good to have a couple of these spare in your Camelbak or tool box , yeah right at 20quid a pop ? 2 of us going to Spain, same frame one hanger between us will we die ? 🙄

Another way to look at it, £20 for a spare hanger or a potentially ruined (expensive) trip abroad?

That's the way I'd look at it. £20 is steep though.

Would one of the universal emergency ones work on a process?

£15 ish for the mech hanger for my bike which seems a lot for a tiny piece of aluminium but minuscule in price compared to what the bike cost and other running costs. However i got the lbs to throw in two spare hangers when i bought the bike. Ill be taking two spare hangers to the alps later this year as i dont want a ruined holiday for the sake of £20

I know, especially when its so cheap to churn them out.
A CNC machine.
A few slot drills, taps, maybe a milling cutter too.
A means of workholding, small fixture or machine vice.
A setter to program & set your CNC machine.
Trust me, £20 is about right given the amount you'll sell.

To be fair, some oem ones are rubbish.
The Goldtech billet machined ones are much better.

TBH I've never had one snap. It's always the mech and/or chain that crumples and takes out the rear wheel.

And why does there have to be 10 million different ones? Standards 🙄

Mech hangers must be made in the same factory as pedal spanners. Been to 3 bike shops and all wanted £15.99+ - for a bit of steel with a plastic handle!
Ordered one off eBay for £2.99.

How often do hangers break though? have done one in 11 years of riding an Ally frame

Not all mech hangers are CNC produced though and they still cost £20.

There has to be 10 million different ones so that manufacturers can rip us off for spare parts.

"There has to be 10 million different ones so that manufacturers can rip us off for spare parts."
Nail - head,

But I rather have to spend £20 than having to get my carbon frame fixed/written off.
Also I would would spend £20 and NOT have a £500+ holiday ruined because I couldn't ride my bike.
As stated there are hundreds out there so no shop will hold them all, so not like you could get one easily = less days riding.

I recommend to all my customers who do a LOT of riding/events/races to always have a spare one (even a old one that's been straightened & replaced be better than none) as it reduce time of the bike from days to a hour!
Also even if you don't/can't fit one yourself, lest you have the spare for a helpfully mechanic to fit.

Yes I do get a lot of BENT (thou sometimes not by much) hangers come through the workshop, which does not help with shifting (main reason it is in the workshop) If this not spotted soon enough or the hanger gets bent again this throws the limit screws out (so to speak) and that's when the mech will go over the big cog into the wheel and bend/break and maybe bugger the wheel/mech/chain/frame if you really unlucky all of them.

I do get a few broken hangers (and the mess they leave) through the workshop, most hangers do there job and it only cost of a hanger & not mech/wheel/frame etc.

You can straighten the hangers but as stated above some are more soft cheese than hard cheese so you can only straighten a few times.
Some pro team have gone away from the "weaker" hanger to more stiff ones to get better shifting.

How often do hangers break though?

Saw 2 in a week in Spain last year. I have only lost one in a life of riding, but that's because I always have a 'flock' of hangers in my camelback due to no industry standards and 4 different mtbs. Think my Dale ones are £25 each, both different ! and C456 is a big billet of alloy. Scandal is the international Taiwan standard jobbie which covers both the Scandals in the garage.

Oldfart I broke 1 and then bent my spare in 6 days in the Alps last year

Also on a Kona process, Defo buy a spare as they aren't a common design

The Betd ones are supposed to be stronger (tho that was the one I bent)
