Are any of them any good? Looking at something for the other half's Alfa Mito as don't really want the hassle or cost of fitting a towbar to it.

The Pendle rear mount wheel support is only £160 and I know their towball mount racks are well-regarded.

Not quite sure what sort of carrier you’re talking about tbh. The description sounds like the type that bolt to a land rover style rear door spare wheel, but there’s nothing like that on a MiTo.

Assuming you mean the typical rear hatch/boot mount type carrier, then yep some can be good and some can be completely useless.  The type of bike you plan to carry can affect success as many try to clamp the top tube which doesn’t work well on suspension bikes.  This can be worked round with a ‘false top tube’ - a bar that clamps between stem and seatpost.

My favourite in this category is the Saris Solo which is cheap but effective. The Saris Bones is a scaled up unit that costs more but takes more than one bike.

Legal problems may exist around number plates and lights (must be visible so probably need an extension board) although I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this actually being enforced.

Ok, just looked at Pendle and I see what you mean. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that type in use unless towball mounted.  Assuming it actually fits a MiTo it should be ok if extremely expensive for a boot rack. The page mentions a fitting guide to check compatibility but doesn’t show said guide on a phone browser.

For £160 you’re really getting close to roof rack territory and personally I’d roofmount over bootmount unless I needed it to be very temporary.

We did think about roofmount but there's no way my other half will be able to lift her bike on to the roof solo, and the main use for it is so she can go out independently of me.

Cheers for the input though 🙂

If it’s for solo use, then maybe the Saris Solo could be worth a pop if it suits the bike shape?  If you’re around South Yorks I’ve a barely used one you’re welcome to as it doesn’t fit my Clubman...
