Can anyone recommend a rear bike light that either clips onto the saddle or your helmet that won't bounce off easily when you're hammering over rough stuff?
I've lost two recently that have been bounced off a fitting on my seatpost.
The Moon Lights have a really stiff fitting - almost too stiff, to be honest. But you'd struggle to lose one of them.
They also come with a range of mounting options in the box, rather than just one choice.
I've got a Moon Pulsar as my second light, that requires AAA batteries. Bit less convenient than a built in battery, but they last for ages - something like 40hrs in high & 60 on low.
EDIT - they do options with built in batteries that i think use the same mounting system.
I've also got an Exposure TraceR; the rechargeable version. It has a very firm clamp. As standard it just comes with a clamp that fits around the seatpost with an elastic band, but there's an optional saddle rail mount.
Bit pricey and I'd be gutted if it fell off!
I use Moon rear lights too. Great saddle rail attachment, and the clip on ‘band’ type fitting goes through the rear vents in my helmet well. Very solid mounts both. Also, the Moon Meteor light is very bright with good battery length.
I use an Exposure Trace R which connects to the saddle rails. Great if you have a dropper.
The bikehut 50lm has a great helmet clip. I leave mine on all the time and use it in daylight flash in the daytime and steady with flash at night.
My best rear light ever is a Cateye Rapid x3 which does have an optional saddle rail mount. Great flashing modes, incredible sideways visibility (over 270 degrees when mounted vertically!) and diffuse so not dazzling to drivers. But when on the saddle mount it wobbles up and down a bit. But it won't fall off if you use the small band it comes with.
@lardman could you share a pic or link to the moon lights with included saddle rail mount?
I'm after the same thing and saddle rail is the best solution for me too, with a lack of below dropper post space.
The Bontrager Flare RT is an excellent rear light and you can get a helmet mount for it. I tend to use mine clipped onto the bottom of my jersey, but then I use it mainly for road riding so I'm not too concerned about it getting knocked off. (No chance of it falling off by itself, though).
Another Moon user here. Again, chiefly because long dropper (compounded with Mudhugger) made post fitment impractical.
Photo for whoever requested it 🙂
Seems good so far, and I really like the 'constant with pulse' mode (similar to Exposure)
Haven't put it through a winter yet, which is usually the test of longevity as it will get used regularly of road in all weathers.
Depends how deeply inserted your dropper post is. Mine has about 1.5cm exposed and I manage to fit a cheap elastic band light behind it. You can just about see it in the photo below.
Cheers all. Ordered a Moon Comet X Pro. It looks like you need the "pro" version to get the saddle rail mount RB-21 included.
On my smaller frames, although I could sometimes fit a light at the bottom of the seat post it'd potentially be obscured by the wheel, especially if I mount a mudguard on the stays, so I prefer to get it higher up.
