Been faffing with my gears. For the life of me I can't get my head around the cable tension being in reverse. Shifters mech, cable, chain and cassette are only half a dozen rides old. But they have been really muddy and gritty rides. I pulled the cable from the housing, cleaned and lubed it, I just cannot seen to get the gears to shift with every click at te lever. I can get them to go from larger to smaller sprockets, but going the other way is problematic. Its taking two clicks at the lever to get it to move back in the opposite direction. What am I doing wrong?

I wants always to be able to shift to a lower gear. Needing a highe gear is always when things are going well

Mr or Ms racer need instant access to high gears hence rapid rise

I don't think it should be on trail bikes

But I have't really gor a clue what I'm talking about

I'm guessing your saying you go to shift but nothing happens? start at the smallest cog at the back shift once.. adjust barrow at the shifter until it has sat nicely in the next gear up.. rest should work fine....

with normal derailleurs you start in top gear and adjust the tension as the shifter pulls down through the cassette (onto the bigger cogs).

rabid rise is the other way up, so start at the [u]biggest[/u] cog (lowest gear), with least tension on the cable. shift up once and use the [u]barrel[/u] adjuster to tweak the tension so it has shifted up a gear correctly.

but your problem sounds more like cable. Is there a kink in the outer/have the wires burst out through a ferrule/are you really sure the mud and grit haven't got in?

Things got a whole lot worse. I had one last go last night, before I resolved to go and buy a new cable and housing. I stripped the clamp bolt on the mech. ๐Ÿ‘ฟ It was a NOS LX one so not the end of the world. But on the positive side I'll replace it with regular rise one. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Rabid Rise XTR one on my other bikes has worked faultlessly since it was first fitted in '05.

It's the best way. Rapid rise is the big blokes choice as well Ive not snapped any chains since making the move.

Big fan of wapid wise. I've always found set up very easy, the last two rear mechs just went on and didn't need any tweeks.
The best for changing under pressure.

t wont shift untill it wants to, hence big blkes can get away with mashing o the pedals knowing that the chain will just skip up of its own accod wthout skipping or snapping.

FWIW one of my bikes is RR on is normal, and rodies are normal by default, no issues waping between the various systems althouh the combo of SRAM shifters and RR mech confuses a lot of people!

because rapid rise goes up the box as it were when your going uphill mashing away and want an easier gear you can get one more easily. I used to break chains going uphill but dont now.

Rapid rise and dual control are wonderful. If i had the money, i'd fit all my bikes with them. Shifting down while breaking is an emotional experience [bites trembling bottom lip].

good, the more people hate it, the more rejected mechs I can pick up on ebay.

rr is fantastic for xc, however, for fast technical dh stuff, i prefer normal. just easier to brake and change gear with normal.

with the new two way shifters (especially xtr with it's multi-shift on both triggers) I find rapid rise is logical and effective ๐Ÿ™‚

mcmoonter, I had the same problem as you when I was learning to set the RR gears up. Also, a friend who is a good amateur bike mechanic, had the same problem. Unfortunately, I can't remember what I now do differently that stops the problem you describe. Do you set the gears up with the chain on or off at first?.

I like the shifting, but its tricky remembering which is which having a mix of mechs of different bikes.

agree - I've switched both my mtb's to RR due to confusion issues. The two single speeds oinly ever do phantom change sanyway and the road bike does catch me out occasionally as I still try 'big lever = harder' changes.
