Budget: £200 to £250ish - Looking for some quite 29er boost wheels to take tyres 2.2 to 2.5inch, ideally around 1850gms combined. Previously bought Mavic Crossmax but afer a set with a quite freehub, how are the lower end Shimano wheels ? thanks
quite what? 😉
At £250 they'll be quite heavy.
Mean while, moving away from 'obvious autocorrect pedant's corner'.
Shimano freehubs are usually pretty silent. If you're happy with cup and cone that could be worth a go. (There are some non series Microspline ones that use cartridges I think?
Gravel wheels would be quite but not quite mountain bike wheels. 🙂

Let's not, there's lots of fun still to be had. And there's more than one pedant btw. 🙂
haa.. Yes you got me there, try quiet.
I changed from a Hope 20FIVE wheelset with noisy Pro4s to Fulcrum Red Zone 5's on my commuter/gravelly bike, partly due to the noise but a good bit lighter too. Plus two pairs of the Fulcrums cost me less than I got selling my Hopes.
Not so cheap now, but they're very quiet in comparison to Hope etc.

I find my Mavic xa with ID360 hub to be quiet enough. And given your budget I'd be looking at Mavic or maybe superstar. Not sure how loud their hubs are though.
If you want
Quite strong
Quite light
Quite cheap
Can you pick all three?
Shimano hubs are generally super quiet - but most have cup and cone hubs. So you need to be careful they don’t get loose /
Run with any dirt in otherwise you ruin the bearing surface on the inside of the hub. I prefer cartridge bearing hubs as when they get gritty you just knock the old cartridge bearings out and fit new ones.
DT Swiss 350 hubs seemed quite quiet when I put them on a bike build for a mate - but you’d struggle to get wheels in budget with those I’d think.
dt swiss m1900 30mm are quite quiet. c1900g. You might find them at £250, but stocks are low everywhere so more like £300 if you find them.
very good, josh!
very good, josh!
Agreed 🙂
But bringing Ng together some different threads, as we like to, why do you want quiet wheels? Freewheeling with a noisy freehub is a great passive way of signalling to pedestrians etc without having to ring a bell or say anything.
Quiets hubs because descending in near-silence apart from the tyres on the ground is better than the Hope BUZZZZZZZZZ. IMO.
Saying that, all my MTB wheels have Hope hubs because I'm willing to overlook the noise issue for the overall performance/reliability/adaptability/cost etc.
quite what? 😉
Read the bloody thread title, he says it right there.
Quite Mountain bike is the new name for Gravel bike, just in case you haven't been keeping up with the cool lingo.

Or do big skiddddzzzzz.
