After proving once more that I can jump for jack I now have a painfully swollen and grazed knee (among other bits)
The photo was taken on Sunday afternoon about 4 hours after the "White men can't jump" moment. I put a cold compress on it for about an hour before this to see if that would help.
It is now Tuesday, sunny and I am working from home. Unfortunately my knee is just as swollen and more painful to move as the skin around the graze has tightened.
Any suggestions for getting the swelling down so I can ride/walk again?
For knees lots of movement is best, the fluid gets easily trapped so walk around as much as possible.
Movement not raised and rest?
Does riding at the Southampton Bike Park count?

Movement is indeed the best thing for knees - but nothing to stop you going down the old ice, compression and elevation route when you're not moving it. You could also try sticking a tubigrip bandage over it during the day if you can tolerate it.
some homeopathic mumbo jumbo, worked for me though
It's not homoeopathic it's a plant based treatment. You may however be correct on the mumbo jumbo conclusion as I don't think any proper trial has shown it to work.
Wow - 1 minute of those exercises (Thanks DrP) and the graze has become a weeping wound. Not blood but lots of orange fluid seeping out of it. I guess that is not a problem but it seems to stain the carpet ๐
Tubigrip and lots of stretching works for me, then ice and elevation whenever I'm not walking.
Tubigrip stretchy bandage (these come in different sizes) on your knee will help keep the fluid down, in turn keeping you mobile. Ibuprofen will reduce inflammation and pain too.
Even the big boys fall off, look about for some knee pads ๐ My mate's 661 rage look more comfy than my rubby IXS hack.
Legs need shaving ๐
Nelson Arnica is homoeopathy ie mumbo jumbo
Cold & Hot......
Just had shoulder surgery and this is what my consultant has said.
Cold to reduce the swelling, then a little gentle heat (hot water bottle) to encourage blood flow, avoid heat directly on the joint though..... keep the joint moving and repeat as much as possible, 3-4 x daily.
I had leg pads, they were resting on the camelback beside the jumps and did no good what so ever!
Legs need shaving Yeah but at least the grass is neat
Swear by Arnica tablets combined with the cream...works well for me.
Have you had a wash since? That could be residue from dirty gloves while holding the back of your leg to try to ease the pain.
Pain? What pain, t'is nothing but a flesh wound.
4 cans of Stella ...and get back down the pump track .......that'll work
Followed Singlecracks advice, well rode up Lordswood instead.
After an unfortunate wheel/drop/mud/gravel experience I now have further grazing and bruising on the same knee but the other elbow.
Any advice on double depth grazes to stop it feeling like there is a weevil boring onto the middle of what remains of my kneecap?
Currently keeping it clean, using Vaseline to keep it moist, ibuprofen to work on the swelling and Laphroaig to work on my general demeanour.
Ah ...maybe you should have tried bitter or ale then .......my bad .....
A night one Brakespears triple and the swelling is getting worse. It has now reached my ankle.
On a slightly serious note, should new bruising and swelling be appearing a week after the original impact?
I still have the hard lump bouncing around inside the main knee swelling that is very painful but now my ankle looks like a nasty sprain. The dark bruises behind the knee have almost reached my groin and there is constant skin pain to the point where I have had to roll my shorts up to stop them touching the skin.
If this doesn't improve by the morning it is either the hospital or Weatherspoons for breakfast.
Knitbone or otherwise known as comfrey, look it up it defo works, my dad has always used/ grown it!
Go to Tesco and buy a bottle of MAN THE **** UP!
Hmm, it's got to that stage now. Amputation is the only way forward for you now.
Sadly I'm familiar with this, not unusual to see brushing behind the knee.
Lost and lots of ice when you first do it , that's history now though. Athletes are now taking ice baths (standing in a waste bin fill of iced water) after big workouts. You need to see a "medical professional", when I've had similar swelling the fluid has been removed with a syringe, it's useful for them to see how much blood is in the fluid.
Might be worth getting the hospital to check it out...
My none medical opinion (based on 20 years of rugby) for what it's worth:
Getting a second hit in the same place a few days after the original injury always makes things a lot worse - the whole area bleeds / bruises all over again and swells further.
I got tackled by an 18 stone Tongan hard enough to damage the surface of my femur (as x-rays subsequently revealed) but being young and stupid manned up and played the following Saturday - I got hit again in the same place and it was over a month before I could bend my leg or play again.
I'd say there's one things you may want to watch out for based on your description:
cellulitis - a skin infection that can be life threatening if untreated, if you get any fever or swollen glands in the groin or a creeping red rash up your leg it will be worth getting to hospital for antibiotics.
If that's not an issue then you'll probaly be ok just icing it and feeling sorry for yourself but probably not worth crashing on it again until it's fully healed...
Finishing the last of the Brakespears off last night seems to have helped. The knee swelling is definitely going down a bit and the skin has patches of numbness replacing the worst of the pain and the ankle looks no worse.
I few ibuprofen, a days rest today and then off to the Bike Park for a ride and BBQ tomorrow. Bring a burger if you are coming*!
*There is a little Tesco just around the corner from the Bike Park so if you turn up and decide to join in, you can.
