I’m just getting around to building up a new rim onto my banjo’d rear wheel. Let’s say somehow I managed to lose the washers that come with a DT FR rim, are they required when building with brass nipples, i recall reading they were only required for alloy nipples?
The washers are needed for the rim, the nipples make no difference. They also contribute to the 3rd so it's possible that your spokes may be too long without them.
It depends on the rim. Some rims with eyelets and ferrules don't need them, but as said ^^, it's nowt to do with the nipple per se
Some hub-spoke holes benefit from washers as well
If your DT rim is supplied with washers and nipples they are supposed to be used as part of the system. The washer reinforces the spoke hole in the Tim and allows the nipple to self align better. If they sent alu nipples and you prefer brass, you can also buy pro head nipples in brass.
I believe not using the washers will invalidate your warranty.
If your DT r(i)m is supplied with washers and nipples...

Thanks ask, found washers and built wheel up. Along I had to buy shorter spokes and rebuild, the shoulder on the Sapim nipples didn’t thread as deeply as the originals,
