Three ball bearngs sit between two plates with dimples in them.
The divots are teardropped in shape and as the lever rotates the first plate rotates too the balls start climbing the ramps of the teardrop shapes forcing the plates apart this pushes the piston.
I've serviced a set before thought it was quite beautiful in its simplicity.
