I want to upgrade my tranny to 11-speed XT M8000. 2 issues:

1 - I have those brakes http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-slx-m675-disc-brake-set/rp-prod115147. Will the XT M8000 shifter be compatible for a single clamp ? If so, do I need to order I-spec B or I-spec II ?
In addition, will any spare parts needed come with the shifter ? (I didn't keep any spare parts that may have come with the brakes as my current shifter is clamped).

2 - I have this 10-speed ring on my SLX cranks. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/octane-one-lock-narrow-wide-chainring/rp-prod127293 Will it work with a 11-speed XT chain ?

Thanks

Nick

10 speed rings are fine, depends how worn it is though

I don't have a clue about i spec though, it's a complete mystery. What's wrong with clamps now? Bars are wider generally got the same or fewer things clamped to them. They should get in the sea.

I agree with you but I really like the idea of a "clean" bar, purely for cosmetic reasons, and particularly with no rear shifter (I even removed the RS remote from the other side). Very shallow though !

Not meaning to answer my own question not confuse the issue even more (is that even possible?) but I spotted this :

I think by "2nd generation" it means I-spec B NOT I-spec II, which is massively counter-intuitive. Could anyone confirm please ?

There was ispec A, ispec B and now Ispec II.

Old 10 speed stuff is either A or B. Ispec A shifters won't go on B brakes as far as I know but B shifters can be mounted to A brakes with the optional T nut.

11 speed generation (but also available as new 10 speed) - ie XT M8000, SLX M7000 Ispec II shifters can be mounted to Ispec A or B brakes with the Hope adapter (£11 each side).

The easiest way is to just buy the Ispec B versions of the shifters. If you think you may get the new M8000 or M7000 brakes in future then get ispec II with the hope adapter or bar clamp.

Thanks but even confused. The shifter I want to buy and linked in OP is the 11-speed XT M8000. It comes in a B-spec version. But I don't know if my SLX M675 lever is B-spec ? The description says "2nd generation" ispec, but I don't know if that means B.

Your slx brakes don't matter whether they are a or b, the IPec b shifters will be compatible with both. Just order from crc and make sure they are a retail boxed shifter when they turn up and include the i spec adapters as some of the oem stuff they sell may not include the correct adapters.

Thanks a lot - and presumably if I ever upgrade my brakes to XT M8000 I won't be able to fit the B-spec XT M8000 shifter, or will I ? Cheers. Nick

No, you'll need to buy a new shifter then. Unless there is a 3rd party adapter out by then or you can codge something yourself. I managed to get an I spec b shifter onto a pair of guides using some connecting bits and a lathe but it never was that good.

Copied and pasted from the questions on the CRC link in the OP.

Compatible only with i-spec b shifters?
does 2nd gen i-spec mean i-spec b?

CRC Staff
Yes; These SLX brake levers are I-Spec B certified, this means I-Spec B compatible shifting levers mount directly to the brake lever clip.
