Numpty question I know but SO has just got a nice new carbon fiber road bike including a Carbon fiber seat-post. So where / how do I put it on a workstand. I'm used to just clamping around the seat-tube (which on all my mountain bikes is aluminium) but this had me stumped last night....

Carry on doing it

Same place. Just gently, with some padding. Carbon isn't that delicate 🙂

Are you capable of adjusting the pressure in the clamp so that it can hold the bike without squashing it?

Yes - clamp the frame or post.
No - take it to a bike shop before you cause yourself some damage.

If you are concerned about the seat post just buy the cheapest metal post you can find & use that when sticking the bike in the workstand.
