Just reading this:

https://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/latest-news/lauren-dolan-says-punishment-braking-caused-collision-439233

This happened to me years ago. I would be gutted if it happened again and the driver got away with it. Should we be fitting dashcams? It looks like the police are now happy to accept their footage.

Any cheap decent ones around?

Mick

I have one of these, effective, has gps for location, app is ok to use (not that I much have other than for reporting a co-op lorry that went through a red light and nearly hit a pedestrian)

My wife is an insurance investigator. She won’t drive without one since being in that job a few weeks. It makes all the difference when you are trying to prove your innocence.

I meant sticking one on the bike but ideally one that would swap from bike to car.

I've got a fly 6 / 12 combo. Not cheap, but worth it in case of driver muppetry... Thankfully haven't had to use footage yet.

Popular opinion on here from people who do their research on the peer reviewed and respected mediums of Facebook and YouTube is they make you ride/drive like a ****.

Back in the real world I have one in all my vehicles and one for commuting on the push bike.

My dad's got one now since his mate caught a French van drift into his(my dad) lane and wipe him out on his motorbike

They cost pennies now are unobtrusive and don't require any input from the user unlike farting about putting your phone on the dash and turning the app one.....given most accidents happen within 2 miles of home it'll be one of those journeys you didn't turn it on for...

Cheap bullet cam off ebay will do the job. I had one for a couple of years til the battery died - footage was fine - you do spend most of the usage just deleting what you've recorded, so one with a phone app is better. I had a couple of Shimano ones with this feature and it was very useful, but the battery life wasn't very good. Currently running a Polaroid Cube - good because you can get GoPro compatible mounts for more mounting options.
I can't believe folk are prepared to pay for those Fly cams -so overpriced.
Like this if you want something cheap https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Motorbike-Bike-Helmet-Action-Camera-Full-HD-1080P-Bicycle-Camcorder/293006842239 - mounting is a bit limited I used a lockblok thing.

I guess one of the advantages of a device like the fly ones designed as a dash cam and not an action camera is they overwrite the oldest files automatically.

Unfortunate and victim-blaming connotation that the word ‘punishment’ carries in such usage. ‘Unprovoked assault’ would be closer if you had to choose.

Depends on the cam. Some you can choose which setting.

i thought it panned out that "responsible drivers" use dashcams to go about their lawful business and that "vigilante cyclists" have cameras and are in the business of provoking drivers into illegal actions?

Have one in the car fed up with red light running, not giving priority at roundabouts etc etc money well spent if ever need to defend against someones alternative reality of their driving

Should really get one for the bike

much prefer the term "cowards pass" AKA "punishment pass" so "coward braking" ? or "intimidation braking" ...pretty much what it actually is...agree punishment implies wrongdoing

I've got a nextbase with a magnetic mount and even with that very convenient system I think it would get old pretty quickly swapping them over all the time.
