If, like me, you are fascinated by the many old routes which cover the Scottish Highlands, this should be right up your street

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01jxv9s

Griff throws himself back into the early 19th century, joining a herd of highland cows and two sturdy farmers as they retrace an ancient droving route once taken by thousands as they trudged 250 miles through the Scottish highlands from the Isle of Skye to Falkirk market

I have a fascination for disused ancient roads too...

I did think about MTBing as many as I could, then I dragged my bike over the Maiden Way in Cumbria and thought better of it.

Some reading:

Can I recommend watching last week's episode on i-player? Twas about the River Thames and its estuary, had absolutely no idea that those places shown existed! Most interesting and it even included weapons being fired. 8)

Yep, will definitely be watching this week too. 🙂

was - thanks for those links, will check 'em out!

FFS! I'm going to GT tomorrow and Innerleithen on Friday. Does that mean I'm not allowed to watch this in between?

On a serious note, this type of stuff fascinates me also by why do the beeb insist on the 'celebrity' presenter? Years ago this stuff would've been fronted by a man in a bobble hat no one who watched Bbc1 at prime time would've ever have heard of - Tom Weir for example..,

Just a wee bump for those that missed it!

Oh -if this sort of thing interests you, then consider a copy of A.R.B. Haldanes "The Droves Roads of Scotland" ISBN 1 874744 76 9

He went at the wrong time of year. He should have waited until the bridge under Loch Loyne was clear 🙂

Someone on here - miketually, I'm sure - once described his cycling as two wheeled hiking.

That's my off road aspiration.

Crieff has changed a bit since I used to buy chips from Johnny Grillies on the way back to the school from Rugby practice. William Low isn't even there now.. sad days indeed.
