And I do mean suffer! You can see the pain etched on their faces

It the nationals this year so there should be some seriously fast boys and girls. Come and watch them struggle up the vomit-inducing 23% gradient. Maybe from outside the pub, with a pint in your hand ๐Ÿ˜€

Just looking at the start times. It kicks off at 12. We'll probably ride in the morning, then we can sit outside the pub covered in filth, making the place look untidy amongst the lycra-clad roades, like last year ๐Ÿ˜€

anywhere from 3.07 on this clip should see your mate in some pain

It has indeed mate. Since then we've moved up the road, so we can now watch the [s]masochistic idiots[/s] competitors from the comfort of the front garden, overlooking the route.

Fancy coming over and joining us again?

I've ridden the rake once, just to see what the fuss was about. I have no desire to do it again, but I might come along just to laugh at the daft people ๐Ÿ˜€

Done that race once, got on the podium for best team of three, will never ever do it again, could taste blood in my throat for 2 days after. The problem is even though you are out of your mind after 30 seconds you still have 2 mins+ were you cant stop because of the crowd.

Love to watch it, a few mates are doing it this year, marginwalker on here is having a bash on Sunday. SUFFERFEST.

Shall we do the same as last year then chaps? Ride in the morning, then get back to watch the lunatics beast themselves, while reclining with a beer

9.30 start from the Rose & Crown?

This is starting to sound tempting... Mind if I tag along? Where would be best to park so I'm not in the way?

That sounds like a plan Plumber. 9.30 start from the R&C, Just a quick blast, Tower/Bucky Woods/Irwell Vale/Michaels Wife Lane/Girls School descent past the Fishermans/fall off down the Steps of Doom, then push any broken bikes back to the Rake to watch the masochists, with a pint

Who's in then?

HP Sauce - probably best to park in Rammy itself and ride up to the pub. All the roads will be coned off, I'd imagine. They've just resurfaced a lot of it this week

Ithink they are hoping the course record of 2.14 goes with the nice new road surface .Just need a following wind.Personally I hate hill climbs might be something to do with being 6ft 4 and 16 stone

I live half way up the bloody thing, and I reckon you'd struggle to get a car up there in 2.14 on a normal day. Anyone who's ridden up it will find that time totally incomprehensible ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

That's the one. The time is taken from the library at the bottom, to the lamp post between the Church and the Shoulder of Mutton. 2.14 is insane!

We will of course be starting our Sunday morning ride by slogging up the bloody thing.

I think I'm going to come and check this out. Strava says it took me 15 mins to do and I remember now, 15 mins of hell.

When I lived in Summerseat this was my route up to Peel Tower but that was on a mountain bike with a triple.... wouldn't fancy it on the roadie, especially after seeing one bloke barfing up at the top one year.

I'm moderately fit and my best time is about 4mins 25 seconds on strava giving it some but 2 mins 15 seconds??? WTF.

Having watched this event today, I was left wondering how much good it does the riders to push that hard.

fluxhutchinson - Me and Plumber were outside the Rose and Crown, though we were sans bikes and had got changed as we were absolutely filthy, and dripping wet from the mornings ride. I saw the guys on the bikes and remarked about the interesting tyre choice. Kenda Small Block 8's in Lancashire in this weather! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

It was a pity about the conditions, as the fastest time was 'only' 2.30. Some of those guys were insanely fast passing us

Plumber also needs to be commended (or institutionlised maybe?) for completing 20 miles, including some pretty serious descents with ...shall we say a slightly 'incomplete' bike

Whats wrong with this picture....

I imagine so, Matt Clinton extolled the virtues of certain hill climbs on a fixie.

The tyre logo, value is shockingly bad though! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Interesting article describing the hill. I could definitely see how a fixed gear would be an advantage (obviously you would choose a gear appropriate for the occassion!). What sort of times do the leaders & mere-mortals get for the climb?

I thought I had ridden the rake but don't remember it being quite the sufferfest everyone is going on about. Checking google maps it looks like I might have gone up dundee ln instead of carr/tanner st and I did it on a mountain bike, with gears, so guess it doesn't count.

I'll have to try it roady style soon.

A quick google reveals my "local" event, the Catford Hill Climb Classic, is the "The oldest continuing cycle race in the world" (whatever that means) - and that I've missed it by 2 weeks! I'll have to put it in my diary for next year. It is a good fit with my philosophy on exercise!
