The bike industry are using product differentiation to reduce direct competition on price.

Because of the massive variation of 'standards' and incompatibility of many products Bike companies are able to achieve monopolistic competition:

This is a response by more traditional manufacturers to the introduction of direct-sales companies like YT, On One, the various Chain reaction brands, Canyon. They cannot compete on price via LBS, so are trying other methods to reduce direct competition on quality and price.
