Problem with safety pin on Shimano cranks

Never had a problem this before using a boist crankset. I can't get the little lock plate on the left hand crank to seat properly. The pin just isn't locating. I'm thinking that it isn't quite in line with the wee hole, but can't quite tell.

Anyone else had s similar problem?

Sounds like the crank arm just isn't going on far enough. Does it fit if you remove the cranks from the bike?

As above.. and check you have the right combination of BB spacers.

My M6100s have been like this for as long as I remember, but my new M7100s are fine. Sticks out by about 2mm.

Didn't realise these had a pin, I've probably bent it somehow although I can't imagine how.

Some explanation of possible issues here
https://www.bikeforums.net/bicycle-mechanics/1205028-hollowtech-stopper-plate-not-dropping.html

and https://www.reddit.com/r/bikewrench/comments/ude09j/safety_plate_sticking_out_on_shimano_cranks_cant/

On my M6100 bike where mine is sticking out, there is indeed a 3mm spacer between the BB and the frame.

There's a drive side spacer on both bikes actually.

I've definitely got the right spacers according to the manuals, and I'm transferring the cranks for another boost frame, so it has worked before. I'm thinking the tolerances are a bit neat to say the least.

Your frame tolerances may be a smidge out, alot of the new Shimano BB's come with 2x2.5mm spacers, and another 2 to make up 2.5mm (think they're 2 & 0.5mm), quite possibly to deal with these sort of issues. If you want a few to try, mail me, and i'll send you a few.

i thought that that bit was supposed to pop up when the bb was properly preloaded. does it have a second function?

Took the arm of my M6100 off for a look.

The pin was indeed bent, but wasn't an obstruction to the tab going down as the hole it goes into is about 4mm diameter. Probably forgot to lift the tab sometime. Anyway, pulled the pin out for good measure, straightened it up and put it back in with a dot of superglue.

The tab won't go down flush even with the arm off the bike, because it comes into contact with the outer bolt. Remove the bolt and it goes down flush. The tab is the same one as my M7100 (haven't dismantled those), with a little step-up. Either the alignment of the crank arm holes is different, or one of the tabs has a deeper cutout to slide over the outer side bolt.

The pin just isn’t locating. I’m thinking that it isn’t quite in line with the wee hole, but can’t quite tell.

You can easily see the pin in the hole when it's there, just need a torch.
