Hi

Not that experienced with bike mechanicing, please help.
My old Mongoose frame cracked recently, replaced with a Marin attack trail. Got the guys to swap the mongoose X9's with the Marin X7's, which left me with a spare X7. I've decided to put this onto my hardtail.

Hardtail was originally 7 speed, so I swapped the cassette with the mongoose 9 speed one and am attempting to get the X7 rear derailleur fitted. I can't seem to find the required setting.

This is my process:
1) I put it into the highest gear (smallest cog). I put the tension adjuster at the shifter into a mid position. I then pull the cable so that there's no slack and clamp it.
2) I then pedal and one-by-one shift through the gears.
3) When I reach about the third cog from the lowest it jumps a gear.
4) When I reach the top the mech pulls it of the lowest gear cog and the chain gets stuck between the cassette and the spokes.
5) I then slacken the tension adjuster so it isn't pulled off.
6) I then, in reverse, go back down the gears to the highest but when I am about half way down it skips a gear again.
7)The final two shifts both correspond to the highest gear.

I can't seem to find a happy medium. Please advise

What shifter are you using?
Sram mechs only work with sram shifters.

Using X-RAM X5 shifters. Is that the problem? Was originally using these with the X9 mech.

Should work fine.
To set up, set on smallest gear click up 1 gear and turn cable adjuster until it shifts up. Then run through all the gears to check.

To cure the problem with chain off into the spokes you need to set the limit screws take chain off and move mech to its max by hand and adjust the limit screw so it dosnt go past the top gear.

Make sure the mech hanger isnt bent aswell.

OK. The bike's away for the evening. I'll give it another shot tomorrow. Thanks.
