Which is best?
Shimano is £30 more, but has a wider rim (says 23.3mm but not if that's internal or external width)? Shimano may also be lighter - 817g, not sure how heavy pro2+819 is. Anyone know?

I woild say the pro2 ones. May be a bit heavier with that rim but i think its better for serviceabilty? I think my hopes run smoother than shimano hubs do.

But front wheels you won't really notice much difference imo. They last fairly long.

Not sure on weight, but if the Shimano costs more, id say it was a no-brainer.
Pro2+819=great wheels.

Ive got pro2 and 819s, got nothing but praise for them. No experience of the shimanos though.

Got Pro2 with 823. Great wheels. Would never go cup and cone again given a choice.

i have pro2 on 819s ran them now for 2 years, no issues and never had to tru them

819s are 23mm wide. Mine seem pretty bombproof and I am 16 stone and clumsy.

Use Pro2 & 819 (from Merlin) on the front of my Reign. Needed new bearings in less than a year - with not that much riding - but is still true and was a doddle to fit a UST tyre tubeless.

ide choose the Pro2 over XT or XTR wheels anyday (i know people who have)
mavics are ace rims too.

i would never use cup and cone full stop though.

Hmmm, well I prefer cup and cone to cartridge bearings. Better sealing and longer life imo.
And easier to service.

I'm pretty sure the last two digits in Mavic model numbers are the rim width in mm, which would make the 819 19mm wide.

Could be wrong.

Probably. Everyone always recommends pro2s though....

What about Stans Flow rims? Wider than 819s and can go tubeless?

819s are fine with 2.35in tyres.

last two numbers are internal rim width which is what affects tyre profile. 19mm limits you to a 2.3 tyre max.

Stan's flow has a 22.6mm internal width so is more comparable to an 823 but 190g lighter!!

I run 2.3s, so technically fine on 19mm (internal) rims like the 819, but wider can't hurt if it's no heavier, right?

I'm running a 21mm rim on the front at the moment and I much prefer the stiffer, grippier, more precise steering feel than when I was using a 19mm rim.

It really doesn't. I have had a 2.5s on mine for a while, including a week in the alps doing the Mega, and had no issues at all - running tubeless with non-UST tyres too.

I don't know how you work this out but as far as I can see the drive side has no sealing. You also might have spent years of faffing getting things to the point where you know exactly the sweet spot is between too loose and excessive wear but it takes me a while before I'm happy. I can bang a new set of bearings out and in in far less time.
