[Closed] Prescription riding glasses

Oakley if they will do them in your prescription, Optilabs if not.

I got some cheap ones from specsavers on the buy one get one free last time I bought glasses. Not perfect (largely down to having a pretty bad prescription so there's distortion in the corners, which took a while to get used to- most places wouldn't even make them for me) but they do for night rides, commuting and the like. I wear contacts for bigger rides.

I think the model was an rx121. Given that they were sort of free, I've been happy with them

Never knew Specsavers would do the free second pair as any type of "sports" glasses.

Rudy Rydon Photo Rx insert. I use them for road and mtb. Just great. Prone to fogging in very bad weather. I can't have single glazing.

Depends upon the strength of your prescription. I use Rudy Project Maya which work pretty well, and the crystal clear photochromic is great in pretty much all conditions.

+1 for Rudy Project, very well made and the ImpactX lenses are superb.

I've had Oakley half jackets and the Oakley lenses were made of cheese. Scratched up really easily and stupidly expensive to replace. Ive now got some Oakley cross link sweep. As they are a complete frame that surrounds the lenses I can have harder standard photo chromatic lenses rather than Oakley lenses. Bought complete from eyewearbrands.com for £168

Another plus for Rudy's with the RX, bought mine from extreme eyewear, much cheaper than direct glazed lenses and you can swap the insert between different glasses if you want different lenses rather than being stuck with one set. And another thumbs up for the impact x clear photochromics, dark to crystal clear, use them year round from summer to night riding. Perfect!

Not sure if I like the look of the inserts

Anyone got a ball park figure for directly glazed glasses? Know next to nothing about this option.

Couldn't care less about how fashionable they look BUT, hypocritically, really don't like insert lenses as I only like clear lenses riding glasses and inserts look terrible.

Yes, think about using contacts with normal cheaper normal glasses instead.

Obviously glasses can get scratches, dropped, lost. This becomes a tad expensive with prescription lenses.

Having used inserts (Rudy Project) and directly glazed prescription glasses (Oakley Jawbone/Racing Jackets), I would not go back to inserts.

Do as I do:

- Find a pair of cheapy sunglasses that you like the frame shape of (in my case, £10 from Mountain Warehouse)
- Send them and your prescription to [url= http://www.ciliaryblue.com/ ]Ciliary Blue[/url]
- Hey presto, prescription, transition lensed riding glasses for about £50.

Can't fault them.

It all depends upon the strength of your prescription - 0 to say +-3 get what you want, +-3 to 5 a bit restricted, high base lenses may require some specialist lens manufacture, +-5 to 7 more restricted, -11 like me then small lens low base inserts like Rudy Project Maya. The advantage of those is that they're also designed to be worn without the front lens but you don't like inserts so that's out, you'll be very hard pushed to find cycling prescription frames to suit those - believe me I've looked.
But - in the end its up to you, what your prescription is, and how much you want to spend.

Having tried Oakley M Frames with inserts and not really getting on with them due to fogging, extra weight of insert being noticeable and ex gap at the top of the frame I am currently using Oakley Crosslink from Optics Planet (iirc) with their own polycarbonate transitions lens. Cost about £140 iirc,They are really good, and I have a second pair I use as daily wearers with std lenses in.
I am however going for a contact lens trial appointment next week though as I'm sick of not being able to see when it's pissing it down, especially at night when the fogging, drips and runs on the lenses make them hard to see through but if I take them off I can't see properly anyway! Have ended up quitting rides early because of it and it made the QECP summer Enduro even more of a trial than it could have been.
