So, being the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kinda guy that I am, up until now I've been using a pretty ancient LX crank with a good old fashioned Octolink bottom brackets. However, the purchase of a new fancy-pants crankset necessitates a swap to these 'ere new-fangled external bottom bracket thingummys.
So, the new (second-hand) crank is a Race Face Next SL, and it came with a FSA MegaExo bottom bracket. Now, I assume that this was the BB it was being used with before, but having looked at the installation instructions on the RF website I'm now slightly paranoid that the BB and crank may not be compatible.
Am I right to worry, or do I just screw the cups in (with the appropriate spacers on the appropriate side), slide the axle through, tighten the other crank arm onto the axle and job done?
I'm not sure FSA and shimano/RF BB's are compatable tbh.
RF also seem to rely on a system of spacers between the crank arms and the BB to provide preload on the bearings - make sure you do this bit right.

Yeah, from reading the installation instructions for the crank (which obviously asumes a RF BB), that's the bit I'm worried about.
Any opinions from the lunchtime crowd?
I believe Shimano/ Raceface/ FSA external BBs are all compatible (I used to run RF Diabolous cranks in a Shimano BB), but as IHN says, with RF cranks you need to make sure you've got the spacers and seals right as without them you'll have wobbly or tight cranks, and it might not be immediately obvious that you've got them wrong.
Cheers. Having thought about it and looked at various installation manuals on the interweb, I think it's some of the seals/spacers/elastomers that I'm missing. I'll have to check when I get home.
wwaswas - cool, YGM
