Are Avid calipers (Elixir R, CR, XO etc) the same size and just adapted to different size rotors using adapters? Or are they size specific?
For example if someone is selling Elixirs stating they are for 200mm rotors is that basically a caliper with a 200 post adapter and I could use the caliper with my 180 adapter and (180) rotors??

Yes. But... Avids (the ones I've had anyway, Juicys and Elixirs) rely on their funny cup-and-cone washers to space them out far enough from the rotors. So you need specific Avid-sized adapters, normal ones for other makes aren't the right size.
