Fancy a wet weekend in Wales in Nov (is there any other kind..) and having bought a copy of MBR for a recent holiday they mentioned Pont Scethin. Having done Snowdon in the past we thought we might give it a try.
So, is it any good and if so which route would you suggest? The route I have found is 13 miles and seems too short.
Or are we better off with something else in North Wales?
Yes.
There is only really one route (from Tal Y Bont)
'Seems' too short ...it ain't.
Cheers Rorschach, so its like a Lakeland 13 miles..
We did it from Dolgellau - along to Barmouth n up n over n back
Well we tried to go over but the cloud came down so we just went up n then down the ridge. The descent back to the estuary path was like a fairy glade...loved it
this is a cracking ride Jason
35 miles and 5500 ft up and down

The classic 13 mile route starting and finishing in Talybont is great takes 2 1/2 to 3 hrs ish. Can be very wet this time of year but still rideable. I also do a mildly cheeky short version when we are in the area and I need a quick ride, cutting across from the top of the first climb above pont scethin across to Bwlch y Rhiwgyr.
The view when you're by the bridge is beautiful. 8)
I found it a bit meh to be honest. The long grassy descent at the southern end is quick with great views but rapidly loses a lot of hard won height; the rocky descent going northwards shortly after is fun but really short. The bit by the river is pleasant, but isn't what I go to Wales for. The rest is just biking around the countryside; nice, but it's just a walk you happen to be doing by bike.
There's bigger, more remote wildernesses to explore, or there are more exciting trails... Pont Scethin does neither for me.
Hmmm, that's was my worry Phiiil, anything else you would recommend? We generally head to the Lakes or more recently the Golfie stuff, will this disappoint?
You could...
1. Take in cadir idris
2. Do some cheeky stuff in the rhiongs- roman steps etc
3. Off piste around coed y brenin (some steep stuff south of the cafe)
There isnt really anything like golfie tbh but there is some nice wild riding.
Cadir idris was another option, is it better than Pont Scethin?
More up and down than a loop. Great descent bit dull going up. Google dan Atherton and cadir idris to see the descent on a sunny evening.
Cadir is mostly a grassy drag and about 300m of rocky stuff.
Do both?
Thanks chaps, think I might leave these ideas for another day and some more thorough research.
