The plating on the non-drive side of my Hollowtech II cranks has started to come away. Looks like it's been worn away by the top hat.

Can I just sand it down and carry on regardless, or is it new crank time?

The BB is dead, obviously.

Thanks

I've had a few do this. I've always carried on regardless and never had any problems.

That's nothing to worry about honestly, purely cosmetic and mine have been like that for years. Bit of grease, bang it back in and off u go.

More likely corrosion on the axle. Possibly bearing seizing causing the top hat to bind on it. Should be fine with a little clean up with some fine grade emry paper.
