Hey folks, anyone know of any good routes for a quick spin up the pentlands, going from the Bonaly carpark. I did it once before but ended up spending my entire time on tarmac, but I've heard there is some rather nice technical downhill to be had.
Looking for a route 10-15 miles long that will be ridable this time of year.
Thanks all
There's a lot of riding at Bonaly but nothing that'll make a loop really, it's push-up-ride-down. As you go up puke hill, you can turn right at the gate through the woods and just ride right round the edge of the plantation- there's not always a trail, lots of it's just rooty forest floor but if you stay without about 10 metres of the fence you'll see some nice stuff...
The downhill trails are over the other side of the stream, and need a bit of exploring. There's some mad stuff and some lovely stuff.
Unless it's very frosty, you'd be better giving any longer routes a miss. However, if you are more into DH than XC, then there's an area known as The Nibbler at Bonaly.
Go through the gate at the top of the car park
Turn left
Cross the burn
Follow the burn upstream and you will see the bottom of the numerous trails.
Push up/ride down until tired.
I was looking for a bit of both XC and Downhill to be honest. Don't enjoy going up one bit but need to get in shape so ideally wanting something I can pedal up! I assume the aformentioned downhills are push up only then?
ride up the hill and explore - muddy in both directions tho once you reach the top so be kind to the trails

There's an incredibly long ride-up round the back, but I don't think many people would do that. The more direct routes can be part ridden, realistically, but only a superhero's going to ride to the top up the front unless there's a better line than I know. Pushing up is hard work tbh!
The lower slopes retain water a bit so are likely to be grim just now, haven't been up for a while. The higher sections have better natural drainage though so might be OK.
