My road bikes does ok with whatever pedals are kicking around from my mtb builds - normally a pair of eggies or candies! Works ok, and has the added benefit of using my Sidi mtb shoes on all bikes.

Does look a little odd though, so I was wondering what was good in road bike world. Last time the road bike had it's proper pedals on it they included straps and buckles! So out of touch with road kit!

If your looking at getting specific pedals and shoes, Time, Look, Shimano all make good pedals, as for shoes, To many makes to name, just get something that fits.

if you need to do any walking in your cycling shoes stick with the mtb shoes. "Proper" road shoes can be a PITA to walk in.

If you're used to the fit and sizing of SIDI's why not just buy a pair of their road shoes?

use candies on mine (until a mate borrowed them and I had to put the mallets on as a temp measure) No real issues easier to walk in etc Doesn't look that wrong really

I use look Keo style pedals, very easy to get in and out off - yet secure to boot.

Shoe wise, I've got a set of Specialized BG shoes with the carbon soles and foot beds, most comfortable.

Had some CB Egg Beaters on my road bike for ages and only put some road specific ones on when I got a new bike. Went for Shimano 105 pedals and Shimano R087 shoes. The shoe soles are a lot more rigid and a more positive click/engage to the pedal. Also felt better with no aching across the ball of the foot area which I used to get with the CB's on longer rides.

Nowt wrong with Mtb shoes and pedals and it keeps the costs down on types of kit.

Mrmo's hit the nail right on the head with his post tbh, anything after that is really personal preference.

I used to use SPD-SLs, changed to Keos as they were a lot lighter, but am considering going back to Shimanos. They're easier to use, last longer, and cleat life is vastly superior.

Yes the shoes aren't that easy to walk in, but I personally buy shoes for their intended function, not other things I may end up doing in them 0.1% of the time. I look a bit silly walking to my bike in lycra, but I'm not about to start riding in jeans and a t-shirt ๐Ÿ™„

I know - I don't need telling!!!

Built the road bike in the mid 90s and then largely ignored it as I got more into mtbing.

It's too nice a frame to not use, so it's been given a second lease of life - but there is no way that I would go back to the original clip pedals, so have fitted with mtb pedals.

TBH, the eggies are so small they aren't realy noticeable (but I prefer them on the mtb). Will give a go again with the candies - saves buying new shoes

SPD's on my road bikes. I've tried a variety of road style pedals and cleats and really can't see what they give me over SPD's and a decent set of shoes.

Except the ability to go on my arse at a cafe stop.
