Hoping that the STW community can come to my aid here! Yesterday my wife looked at my cycling shoes (flats specific) and told me than I should get a new pair. They’re a bit ragged as one of them was hacked off my foot by medics after I had been dragged down the road by a 4WD. That’s another story in itself. Anyhoo… I now have the manager’s authorisation for capex and I intend to make use of. The dilemma is that I hate running flats, and only do so after an accident 3 years ago when I fell off and snapped and dislocated tib/fib in my left leg. This happened because my cleat didn’t release, but the rest of me did. The culprit was a pair of crank bros Mallets. The dilemma is do I take this opportunity to switch back to clip less or do I stick with my loathed flats. If clipless - do I dust off the mallets or go for a different system?
What don’t you like about flats?
Shimano clips set loose.
I’m just used to that connected feeling with the bike, especially on rough terrain. Also seems to help with keeping my feet consistently positioned on the pedals. I guess the big thing is that I’ve ridden clipless for pushin 30 years now and it’s hard for a old dog to learn new tricks!
Amd 2 spare pairs of cleats.
So you can change them when they're worn but before they are dangerous!
@fat-boy-flat do shimano last better thank crank bros? I seem to needed to replace cleats every 12 months or so with cranks bros…..
You can get cleats that release at a small angle to start then if all goes well and you want, you can get cleats to release at a greater angle
Same cleats, you just swap them to the other shoe. Long time Time user here but got fed up of the fast wearing and clicky single spring pedals and wearing holes in the soles of my shoes, so have moved to Shimano.
You can get shimano multi release cleats if you want to ease back into it, I don't personally like them as they can unclip when bunnyhopping etc.
I rode in Shimano pedals, then switched to time pedals after damaging my knee.
I got fed up of replacing 3 pairs of cleats a year and moved back to Shimano.
I never had any moments getting out the time pedals.
I ended up with time specicial pedals. Great, just over 4 sets of SPD pedals the cleats added up.
