Pedal bushings, Vau...

Pedal bushings, Vault in particular

There have been a few threads over the years about DMR Vault bushings but looking through the Igus catalogue and literature there are a crazy number of polymers available. I can find Igus recommendation for J3 G300 and W300 to name a few.

Does anyone have experience in this field and suggest the best option for bicycle pedals?

Next question, has anyone added V seals to their pedals? Popping a V seal on a 1m pedal axle looks like the seal OD would be 21mm. That's a pretty chunky pedal.

Speaking of Vault pedals, does anyone have a recommendation for a specific brand of socket that will fit inside the pedal body to remove the axle retention nut please?

The ones I've tried from Halfords are too wide to fit inside.

I use a Goodyear branded 8mm but any thin walled socket should fit. I think my old Draper did.

@Onzadog how many W300 do you need? I bought in bulk and have a few I could sell very cheap.

I've got 3 sets of these pedals so I was going to order a bag of ten that drops them to a couple of quid a piece. How many do you have?

I found in my vaults that the bearings lasted as long as you got the bushes early.
I've just abandoned my vaults 9 years, 3 axels and numerous bush/ bearing changes. They finally spat the dummy (bush) for the final time. Great pedals though.

I have a 1/4" bahco socket set that fitted just fine.

I bought 26, and have like 20 left, but I didn't get them that cheap, it was around £2.50 each.

I use the same for the V11 pedals. However if the original brass bush has been in for some time, I find that the axle may need changing too.

The last two sets of pedals I bought, I changed out the brass bush for the igus bush before using them. I get far longer service life before needing to change the bush and the axle looks unused.

As for a socket I have a this set Linky

Little shorter in the V12. 12x14x10 instead of the 12x14x12 on the Vault.

I use the Teflon coated bronze bush and a v ring seal and keeps them rattle free for ages and not had to replace the axles for ages either now.

Will dig out the part numbers from my order give me a moment

@goby thanks for that. Do the V seals extend above the body of the pedal?

Does anyone have any hacks for removing the bushings without the DMR bushing tool? Cant find anywhere that has them in stock.

I've heard that you can screw in a ½" bolt and pull as the bushing is shot anyway. I use a blind bearing puller myself.

@goby

Finally got the bits to do this. Did you use the V seal in addition to the standard seal, or as a replacement?

Make sure you get it spotless where the seal fits so it sits in properly
