I noticed today that my scandal frame has the threaded holes for a pannier rack but it looks like it will foul if there are disc brakes...does anyone else have a rack on their scandal - if so what type, and did it require a bodge to avoid the brakes?
thanks!
You need a disc specific rack.

I believe its a problem with all disc frames not just scandals.
I have racks on several bikes - just spacing out the bottom mount will do. The topeak rack is very clunky
oh right - just with multiple washers or little pipe washers? sommut like that...makes sense - I guess the rack sides are malleable enough?
cheers folks...
Same question but I need specific recommendations for which brand/model of disc specific rack, not so fussed by how much it costs as its functionality, the more versatile the better, lighter also helps but not so light that it fails in 6 months time. Thanks Paul B
We've always had good results with the Topeak range (and it gets you into their click to fit system). As said above, you can bodge with washers, but why bother if you're buying a new rack, may as well get the correct one to start with.
the topeak ones are excellent. the second rail about 1" below the top rail makes it a lot stiffer than some others.
I use a Blackburn EX-1 (disc specific) on my 456 for attaching a baby seat to.. so obviously it's stiff as cluck
I'm not sure how confortable I'd be with a spaced out rack-mount and a heavy load, depending on how it was done....I recently sheared a bolt touring on a disc-specific rack, I would imagine the leverage on the bolt was a factor.
Luckily I was able to effect a decent bodge, could have caused big problems though.
You need a disc specific rack.
Not necessarily. My Inbred doesn't need one, and nor does the Spesh Hardrock I've also recently 'racked up' ๐

We have 3 bikes with racks and discs - none with disc specific racks - I got rid of the topeak disc specfic one as it was so clunky and horrid. tubus are the best - and simply spacing the bottom mount out a little works perfectly well. The topeak one spaced it out about 30 mm and looked awful and was very heavy
TJ - what are you spacing them out with, and by how much?
i found a blackburn rack went straight onto my scanal and i used a m part seat clamp with rack bosses on it for the other end. Don;t use it anymore as i sold the frame let me know i u want to purchase the seatclamp its in as new condition.
