...use them still?
Just dug a pair of RC41's out of the shed. They need a complete overhaul, new stanchions/revised internals. Happy to pay the bill 'cos they look ace. Or should I just get the usual RS/Fox..yawn.
They are going on a Hustler. Do you think with the new launch control etc I will still end up endlessly fettling them?
Dunno...
I have a pair of steel RC35 stealth carbon jobbies (the last with chrome stanchions) that I got to bung on my Klein, after the older RC35s I had on it went sloppy.
The thing is, after many months of using Rebas and F-series Fox, the Pace forks simply feel 'wooden'. They work okay enough, but don't seem to match the performance of modern air sprung forks. I think it's the mixture of the steel spring and that stupid 'G-spot' greasing system - which fades in its usefulness after about 30mins riding.
Something that might not matter at all on your RC41s?
If they're a good set then I'd happily get them sorted. If not, definitely not.
I do still use a set of RC-41s. Still feel great even with their current need of a service.
Never in a million years. There are better forks out there that don't self destruct when you mountain bike with them.
Pace forks don't self destruct. IF you get a good set. that was always the problem - very inconsistent quality control. Good sets lasted forever, bad ones a couple of rides and there were equal (it seemed at least) quantities of both so it was like playing roulette.
been running a set rc41 fighters for over a year now. oil change when i got them and a new set of seals and oil change a couple of months ago.
they feel great to me. but then I only have budget forks to compare them with. bomber z4s, rs psylo xc's and marz mx comps.
send em up to fork english. only ever heard good thing about his work.
I'll accept that's probably true. Mine were obviously in a bad batch, both sets!
I still don't trust them though.
I ran some for a year or two. They were ok, but modern stuff (Rebas or Revs) are way better.
Hmmm... I remember my RC40s from 2005.
Lovely, lovely looking forks with excellent damping (way better than the Pikes I replaced them with) but I had a few quality woes.
The travel used to adjust all by itself and despite being sent back twice and being shipped back with a completely new travel adjust assembly it was never fully resolved. The anodizing wore off on windy days and the seals were pretty inadquate too. And the lockout adjuster used to loosen and fly off of it's own accord.
For the right price I still would though.
I still ride my RC30's from the early nineties......
But even with that I'm still tempted!
Left a message with Fork English. It's them or Fox Vans...
I had some RC40's back in 2006 and thought they were ace. Sold to a friend who still runs them with no problems. The later Pace forks still stand up against newer gear IMO.
Have you thought about a new set of DT Swiss? As you probably know, they're basically new versions of the Pace forks. I've just got a set after problems with both Fox + RS and have to say they ride better then either of the top two. No idea why more people don't have them.
I would put one of those 9mm superstar q/r's on.
the steerer snapped on mine, 10 mm inside the head tube, I got a few days in hospital a week off work and 28 stitches in my mouth and about 15 on my forehead, I lost a tooth. I think you're nuts.
I was quite keen on the DT Swiss incarnation of these until the prices were unveiled. What was a £539 fork when built by Pace became an £850 fork when sold by DT.
So I went elsewhere.
I'd be very wary of the bonding of the droputs to the carbon legs. Mine failed on both legs at the same time causing a fair calamity for me. I do not expect the front wheel to fall off my bike.
Mine were older models, perhaps they sorted them out later. Based on what RS, FOX, Magura and others are making I just don't see why.
I've been using a set of RC40 (41?) Fighters for nearly five years on my geared bike, and am very happy with them. They've been to Fork English (agree with the poster up there ^^ that Tim is great) a few times to be serviced.
OP - if you decide to sell your ones then I might be interested. Was annoyed to be too late to the ad clubber put up for his.
I had a set of 2005 rc40s that I used trouble free for 5 years.. One service after about 2 years. Never had a problem with them at all... Sold them for some revs when I got a 575 and needed a bit more travel.
Didn't realise there were widespread problems.. Mine were faultless.
I would.
I've a set of RC36 PCII's that need new seals and stuff, currently langishing on the wifes bike which is used for gentle pootles to the beach or around the duck pond with the kids.
I've a set of RC41F that I've owned from new (I did a lot of OT one year and treated myself) - serviced by fork english and are on a bike that is ignored and they work a treat, just slurp up anything on the trail.
In fact I liked them so much I then also got a set of RC40xcam which I stuck on the full suss which also work a treat.
I'd have no qualms about getting another set.
Considering that they've been sitting on a shelf for 5 years everything still works when I do the scientific, pushing down on the steerer test. Just the worn out anodising problem.
2002 RC36 Proclass IIs - still giving sterling service on my Global....

Some forks that actually work, what a stupid idea!
After my RC30's (mentioned above) I bought a set of RC36 EVO III's that lasted 9 years with regular servicing and no failures in use. So I replaced them with a set of DT Swiss XMC 130's when building my current bike. Got the forks half price - so cost is not an issue - and had one failure, where pressure from Xtreme MTBing action blew a seal on top of the stanchion with damping. Didn't matter much though, forks where due their 200 hour service and Pace charged me nothing extra to fix that.....just a few months ago.
Moral of the story - It'll soon be 20 years since I started using Pace made or derived forks, with one minor failure so far.
However, I do rate and have used other forks before. I have had bad experiences with Shocktech and Rock Shox. Having typed that, you may struggle to find Shocktech in the shops (very exclusive) and it is over a decade since I bust my Judys for the third time 😀
Agreed Wade. I picked up my DT Swiss XMM 140's for £450 so not much more then Revelations and lots less then Floats. As mentioned above, they perform better then both IMO. Not had them long so had no issues but would recommend them to all so far.
Yeah, defo doing it. £250 ish gets new DT steerer/stanchion assembly, new bushes and upgraded internals. Only the lovely carbon lowers will be original methinks 🙂

Hindering the performance, more like!

I'm going to refrain from saying what I really think to that response, other than if you feel like testing whether it 'hinders' my performance, then any time you're in Devon.........
......muppet.
