car came with a towbar fitted and electrics worked ok but now no output to board for bikes - looked at all the obvious things and def power input to relay and no obvious cable breaks to pins and tried a new board but that was dead

so need suggestions for a tow bar auto electrician - north side sheffield please

mobile towbar services have fitted a couple of towbars for me and are always very reasonable but I think you'll be better with an auto electrician rather than a towbar specialist. And for these i cannot help much.

Isn't there a place called Towsure or something?

I know that's probably zero help, sorry

have used towsure to fit towbars in past and been great but they now subcontract it and are not interested in electrical problems that aren't their making

edit PS but thanks!

Spend a tenner on a multimeter and see where the power stops. If theres power at the input to the relay what about at the output. Or get a new electric kit and fit it.

Well anyway, I hope its that easy, I fitted my towbar today and I,m doing the electrics tomorrow, Fingers crossed.

sweepy +1

Just get a 12v circuit tester. A screw driver and some wire strippers. Buy a Hella connector, they are the best for long term reliablity. Half hour job.

can't find any but then again if its as "intelligent" as mnfr makes out faults elsewhere will mean no power output = catch 22

if can pick up a relay exactly same as one fitted may replace but i'm not 100% convinced that a couple of hours of wire twiddling will resolve or would give it a go - am a bit doubtful about guessing what would be a good alternative - so far can't find existing unit anywhere

mcmoonter

thanks useful reminder - not checked the earth on the 7 pin - which is the usual suspect

It sounds like your relay is cleverer than mine. Why not spend 25 notes on a simpler kit and bang it on (he says overly confidently)
Got to be cheaper than an auto electrician.

sweepy has a good point but if push comes to shove and not fixed by bank holiday weekend pound notes versus mean and nasty "you should have got a man in" would mean life only worth living if not at home - its an 05 Renault Espace and the electrics are a little french - good news when the buttons all work - bad news when you try to find what actually does what

I understand that right enough, like I say, im doing the electrics on a citroen tomorrow, or at least before we go on holiday in the caravan on monday.
Im just assuming its going to go well because theres not much room for it not to ๐Ÿ™‚

these are the people I used, they seem to recommend the same kind of thing I got. It comes with scotchlocks, which i'll reserve judgement on for now, and may replace later. And whatever you do dont believe their next day delivery guarantee.
