hi guys wild stab in the dark i have a top of the range carbon trek madone, in grey with bonty gear on around 2005 i think, also think it had vw stickers on too, the reason i dont know is i had it painted, and cant remember what model it is and now want to sell it, im fairly sure the frame, when new was between 2000 and 2500 pounds new alone!! i did buy it second hand from a friend who was a sponsered rider so he too did not take too much notice either, ps its not stolen i am genuine and would like to know if anyone can help , thanks brian.

Treks from about 1992ish onwards had VW stickers, I bought a black frame about then, but the trendy ones were the white and blue ones with VW and Shimano stickers on.

£2000? No, I don't think so. I bought a 5200 frame only from a Trek Dealer brand new and it was £999... and the 5200 frames were identical to the 5900 frames; they just put a different groupset on...

If you've had it painted, by anyone other than Trek, the lifetime warranty (for the original owner btw...) is probably junk.

It's a 4-5 year old carbon frame, with no warranty, with a new paint job, and is now third hand.... You're looking at £200- £300 if you're very lucky...

If its been sprayed by Argos the warranty still stands, otherwise not. Also the frame is older than you think, may be up to ten years old and it wouldnt be a madone.

With the frame number, Trek should be able to tell you the exact model.

VW was only mtb sponsorship, a road bike of that era would have been US postal.

Look through the bike archives on the Trek site.

..having said all that, I'm still riding mine from 1999, and it's the most comfortable road bike I've ever ridden. Weighs a bit more than the latest carbon exotica, but is a proven tour-winning frame, perhaps a bit over-engineered, but that becomes a plus when it's bouncing down the road without you on board...

Keep it and ride it!
