Hi all.
ive had a pain in leg for 12months and just lately needed to limp from time to time. When and seen a consultant last thursday and he suspects its the first stages of osteoarthritis. I will be having an mri scan in a couple of weeks.
im just 6ft 4inches and just over 16stone. Im going to loose half a stone to see if it helps.
my main concern is im 38 years old and love riding my bike. Ive just had a new carve pro mountain bike and been doing about 30mile a week.
has anyone been told to stop or had to stop riding due to arthritis in the same area?
At first I thought it mite be sciatica and is why I bought a new bike and started riding again.

From what I have seen, some good exercise is recommended.

Consultant told 100miles no! 5-10 yes. Catch 22 situation if I want to get fitter but not make things worse.

If it helps, my mum has Oesteoarthritis, she's 63 now, and usually walks 4 or 5 miles a day still, possibly more.

She's stiffend up a bit in the last few years, weight loss is going to be a good thing, as long as you do it sensibly.

Have you spoken to your doctor about exercise and prognosis? It'll be worth going back to see if you can see a specialist who can talk you through things.

hi rickon,

I had a appointment with my gp yesterday. ive asked for blood tests to be done because I think I may have what ever it is in more than one place. my elbows hert from time to time especially when ive been carrying something. got to give the blood Thursday. I asked about exercise and he said 10mile 3 times a week is fine for now until ive had the mri scan to confirm what is wrong with my hip.
Told my other half today that ive had the pain too long now for it not to be arthuritus. ive had symptoms for the last 2 years in the same area and now im limping. got to be!
my moms fault shes riddled.

I have a mild touch on one side due to wonky leg geometry (squinty hip-bolts and weak ACL, loads the joint up wrong). It doesn't stop me from doing anything I want to do, but it does bloody hurt, pretty much all the time. It's worth it, for me.

Long term prognosis for me is uncertain, it probably won't get better but it might never get worse, especially as my walk's got better over time... with such a lack of clarity I've not changed anything since it means acting crippled now, in order to avoid possibly getting crippled later. But if it worsens I guess I'll have to change things about.
