is it normal to have the bolts that attach the mech hanger to the frame keep screwing?
they seem to go in, tighten up somewhat, and the keep spinning? like no more tightening can be done? they dont look like they would come out, but still? or is that a safety feature to allow the mech hanger to snap off easily should it need to?
also is there an easy way to tell if the mech hanger is slightly bent? without it being glaringly obvious?
Sounds like stripped threads (in the hanger).
I have just had a look at my 5 as it lives in the living room. The bolt tightens up and does not keep screwing or turning, i would say you may have buggered the bolt somehow......
My mate had this thing on his bolt on his FSR CX Pro a while ago, I was popping into the LBS so I said I would ask if they had a bolt I could take back for him. The guy at the shop said hanger bolts are the same as the bolt as you find on chainrings.
It worked just fine and cost a few pence. Looking at my 5 I would say this is right. I should say I am no expert but just recounting my experience!
Hope this helps!
Like three fish says......stripped! ๐
Also, bent mech hangers.....I don't know of any other way than just looking at it, maybe you could take it off a lay it on something flat. I have had bent ones in the past that have messed up my shifting but the LBS straightened it.
hmmmmm righty, strange that then, as the hanger was replaced with a new rear mech at the LBS....the bolt looks like it fits fine too...
edit : ive just looked and it seems one is tight and tightens up to a stop, and the other doesnt ๐
should i worry? even with the rear mech off, and just having a pull at the hanger there is no movement?
ahhh sorry misread, in the hanger itself not in the frame itself then??
does this also perhaps suggest the hanger maybe buggered? perhaps taken a hit thats damaged the threads inside?
Which one tightens and which one doesn't?? If the big one spins it's prolly stripped......
must admit my shifting has been a bit off recently, too, and in certain gears ( even with a new front and rear mech) it still doesnt look quite right, guessing now (as i got rid of old mech as it was bent and took a hit) that i really should have replaced the mech hanger too.....
as i said it doesnt really look bent to the human eye i dont think ๐
i think they are both the same size from what i remember? two little star type ones? cant say as i remember one being bigger than the other?
moonhead can you confirm if thats sat next to you for me?
is the bolt part just spinning at the back when you tighthen?
hmmm really not sure junkyard, was fitting a new rear mech, and thought id check to make sure they were tight....as i checked the 2 star types ones....one tightened and one just kept spinning, didnt really see anything more than that?
the screw came out though i do remember that, as i thought it was a bit odd....it didnt just pull out it did screw out...
hmmm im gonna get a new mech hanger, do they come with new screws?
assuming the threads in the hangers have gone of course?
The hanger should be ok, the big bolt that connects the hanger to the mech comes in 2 parts so the mech doesn't have any threads to mess up. If it spins it is most likely stripped. My mate ran his bike for a week in Morzine like this tho!
As for shifting, I had some right trouble with the lower gears on my 5. I had it in 3 different bike shops! The third place replaced the inner and outer that go through the swing arm and that seemed to fix it. I have noticed that the front mech sticks quite a bit when clogged up with mud.
It's one of those annoying problems though when you just end up replacing parts just to find the problem......I guess you could try the hanger since you have had new front and rear mechs.
It'll be the hanger thread that's stripped, much softer material than the bolts. If you get a new one, make sure the bolts aren't torx unless you've got the correct tool(TX20).
Yeah if it's one of the 2 star bolts, as coatesy says the hanger has stripped.
thanks moonhead & coatesy, ill order a new one just to be sure...
it is one of the 2 star ones
yeah think they are t20 now, fine though i have the bits if it does come with that....
thanks again folks!
Ignore me despite owning an Orange I was thinking of my hardtail which has a nut and bolt set up then Orange is just those two little torx bolts - as others note knackered get another
