So i recently picked up a 2010 Orange Five Pro. I want to make it slightly more hardcore/AM and would love some ideas and possibly pictures of what you have done??

I was also wondering if the fox 34's are a better option than a 36??

Thanks 😀

It's probably also wrong in that case 😉 There are some parts on that'll be lighter than the stock build though, so wont be far off the mark

Ive had a few 5's over the years and currently have a 2013 a.m. I have to say that the 140/140 is a better bike than the 160/140. It climbed better and was faster everywhere except steeper dh's. The 5 is a very strong bike but you pay for this with a fairly heavy weight (not weighed it but guessing 32/33 lbs). If I was to choose again I'd have an Enduro as it was much more capable, both xc and dh and lighter ! Overall I like the 5 a.m but be prepared to lug it around til the slopes come, its strength is its strength but it comes at a price.

It was taken at the Specialized stand at Crankworks, should be a normal build, and there's no dropper on it either.

I did look at the Enduros and think they are really nice bikes. But i had to get a british made orange!Im not too much of a weight freak but as long as its not over 33.5 lbs Ill be happy!
What would be the best investment to make it only slightly more AM?

If I were to try anything it would probably be swapping the Float 34 160's to set of Pikes, they were a great fork !

thats a bit a falsity though legend, thats an Enduro EVO, so bolt through back end, Coil springs etc, its a fair whack heavier than a normal Enduro.

back onto topic, the 34's are an awesome fork, as are the 36's, both really capable, 36 only really needed if you are planning on going to the alps as the extra 1/2lb in weight over the 34's goes into a stronger chassis

legend - Member

This is a medium 2012 Enduro

That's the bottom-of-the-range Evo version though - fairly low end kit, and coil shocks front & rear

I have a custom built Five with Lyriks. It's great to ride- I prefer the extra travel up front. Mine's definitely erring on the beefy side of a Five build and I use it for big mountain stuff regularly.

Mine is built with coil Lyriks, Hope hubs on Stans Flow, Pro Vanderham bars/stem, Shimano DX spds and a Reverb. I'd suspect it weighs 32lbs.

I love how it rides, but I'm going to get a new one next year that'll be built lighter- new Rockshox Pikes (so still 160), Race Face SixC cranks and bars, Stans Arch rims. I'm also going to go back to Schwalbe tyres rather than High Roller LUSTS. Hopefully get it below 30lb and then I'll be very happy and maybe get rid of the race bike.

I have ridden mine with 140mm Pikes and prefer it at 160, though a travel adjust fork may be helpful.

munrobiker - Your bike looks and sounds awesome, iv considered lyriks and i do love them. Would the new Pikes 160 be similar to the lyriks? Im quite light weight so im heading towards a either a fox 34 or a similar rock shox i think. Just need to man up and make a decision!

My 2009 5 started life as AM spec. I got it second hand and have gone back to 140mm forks after the 160mm Fox turned to mince. To be honest, it does as much on the downs with the 140's (DT XMM140's)and climbs better. The 5 feels better as 140/140 imo.

strange five from about 2008.

lyriks on mine currently set to 160 with a solo air cartridge. keep meaning to space them down to 140 as it rode much better at 140 when I had a coil u-turn in there.

Here is mine... float 36 RLCs for me... it's a heavy bike though, and hard all day in the peaks... I'm more frequently taking my carbon cube out nowdays and having more fun.

I reckon the new Pike will have all the stiffness someone light willl need while still having the extra travel of a lyrik. And save a chunk of weight.
