I am looking to replace a dented Stans Flow MK3 rim (user error with low tyre pressure) and as they are not obtainable anymore I am not sure what to replace it with.
Mainly local forest / occasional trail centre use with Maxxis WT tyres 2.6 max. I will probably run the rear with an insert.
I see that the DT Swiss XM481 is a regular recomendation, are there any others I should be looking at ?
Good choice, I reckon.
I went with a M502 for my son's Remedy - right width, needed to be tough, was in CRC sale.
DT Swiss seemed to be the best option. Next on the list was a Halo, but that wasn't in the sale 🙂
Thanks !
Have been looking at Raceface too, but not a fan of asymmetrical rims (I have some ARC31s and I hate changing tyres).
I'd buy the XM481. Had them before and I'll buy them again when I need them.

if you liked the flow Mk3, the flow MK4's are available. alternatively, if you want something a stronger for the rear (the flow MK3's were a little soft), try the Flow EX3 rim
The Flow 27.5" Mk 3 has a 567mm ERD, the XM 481 is 563 mm, so you may have to budget for shorter spokes.
At least the XM DT rims come with nipples so you'll be sorted there, just make sure you get spokes with a 2mm thread.

Thanks, I had been expecting to have to use shorter spokes, so have been keeping an eye on eBay for an unused SH Flow MK3, but looks like it is inevitable.
Spokes have not been getting any cheaper, so I was curious about spoke shortening services, are they just for new spokes or can used ones be shortened too ?
Whilst I'm sure it's possible, I'm not sure how economical it will be when a decent spoke (i.e. a DT comp) can be bought for about a quid each.
You'll also be going over an existing thread so unless the thread rolling die is perfectly aligned you could end up weakening the spoke.
Sun Ringle Duroc 35 28h/32h (31mm inner)
has an ERD that's 1mm more,
And only 15g heavier. Not used Stan's, becauase Duroc rims are dirt cheap where i live. I've run 30/35/SD42 on various bikes, tubed and tubeless. Not long term yet, but I like how easy they are to build and true, and how they have stayed straight through stuff the other rims I've used haven't.
Pretty sure I have a very lightly used mavic ex 729 in the loft if that is any use.
