Hello. I'm currently touring in Mexico and before I brave the local bike shop with my terrible Spanish I thought I'd see if you guys could give me any ideas...
I've ridden about 10,000 km so far, so I'm guessing the problem is wear and tear of some sort. Whrn I pedal in slightly too high a gear, or start pedalling after coasting, it feels like the back cassette doesn't "catch" straight away. There's a little bit of crank rotation that does nothing, then a kind of click (which I can feel in my foot/leg, and it's always at the same place on the revolution), then it's okay. Also, I can wobble the pedals and cranks a bit with my hands so maybe it's just that?
I'd be grateful for any suggestions!

First comments sounds like the freewheel on the rear hub is slipping.
Hwever the fact that you can wobble cranks sounds more related to your bottom bracket.

Sounds like you're having an adventure. Enjoy!!!

Agreed, first issue sounds like a problem with the freewheel in the rear hub not engaging immediately.
Second problem sounds like the bottom bracket is on its way out.
Sounds about right after 10,000km of use!
Sounds like you're having a blast, though might be best to brave the bike shop with this one!

sounds similar to a problem I had. Turned out to be a worn chainring.

The wobble is down to a worn bottom bracket

I saw a lot of folks on the transam this summer with badly worn chains. The chainrings wont be such a problem as there is a big wraparound the chain rings. Your bottom bracket bearings are probably goosed.

The freehub body may need regreasing or replacing depending on the type.

I have ridden fully laden around 6500 road miles (10500kms) on the same chain, cassette and chainrings and BB.

Do you have a blog of your trip?

Thanks for the replies, looks pretty clear. Hopefully I can get it fixed without too many problems! The chain is fairly new but otherwise everything is original.

Mcmoonter - yes, I have a blog at CGOAB , hopefully I'll get around to updating it in the next day or two. Currently in La Paz.

Alpine girl, the blog link doesn't work for me. Can you post the CGOAB permalink?
