With the number of 100-120mm forks on sale cheaply I think you could built a whippet real cheap
Any thoughts on which fork, also cheap/light wheels bars etc
Might nick some parts of the mrs felt while shes laid up
But more importantly are they fun
do you miss the extra travel from longer forks
Or is there something better
Bering in mind im building a training/scared of a dh bike
Mines arriving tomorrow... Time will tell!
My wife has been riding one for the past year or so. Built up with 100mm Fox forks and fairly lightweight components. The bike is slowly getting lighter and lighter, next thing to be changed are the wheels as they let it down a bit at the minute. The frame isn't as light as some carbon frames, I think her 16" one weighs 1.3kg including the dropouts, but for the price it is a bargain. Her blog is over on XCracer.com:

It is mainly used it for xc riding/racing around Swinley like trails, but it has had a few fast spins around Welsh trail centres without any problems. So far it has stood up to the use pretty well. The original BB died fairly quickly, but the KCNC one I replaced it with has been much better. Mud clearance is very good.
I would go with a single or double ring up front. While a triple does work, the clearance is very tight. Lou has been much happier with the gears since switching to 2x10.
Do it! Ive got 120mm bolt through rebas on mine (sagged a bit mind you) and its sweet, so much control. If you are looking for wheels i might have a set of Pro2s on Stans 335s for sale....
I’ve just finished building mine. Full Sram XX group with Sid 120mm XX forks and it’s amazing. So light, quick and responsive, cannot wait to race on it now. Would easily say it’s the best hardtail I’ve ever owned.
I enjoy riding mine - it's fun on the singletrack and feels zippy and agile. Not a barrel of laughs on the descents if I'm honest - geometry puts you pretty forward onto the bars but that's the type of bike it's designed to be. You'd need to be a good rider to really lash it down anything tricky.
Mine is also a bit problematic in that I'm between sizes (Med and large, riding a med) so need a longer stem than is maybe ideal.
Didn't know it was rated for a 120 mm fork - I'd like to try something like a bolt through reba, could make quite a difference.
Haven't really got any cheap bits on it because I'm a tart.
charge spoon - cheap saddle 😉 😛
Yep, I've got one. I've also got a Five as my trail centre bike, but I use this morning than pretty much every other bike (including my road bikes) as I train on it as well.
Started off as a rigid singlespeed, weighing in around 18lbs. Then went to 1x10, then a SID in the front and I've now got a new set of Durins sat behind me ready to fit for this weekend.
I think its ace. Yes, on the techy DH stuff it gets a bit nervous but that's not what it's designed for. Build it up as a light, fast XC bike and its awesome. I run mine with 100mm forks, an Enve riser bar and the saddle in the air and its brilliant. A do anything bike....

You haven't got any expensive bits either though... Looks like a very normal spec 😕
Flanges looks the best so far!
defo need some yellow grips and saddle 😉

I always did like you.....

We've had this discussion before, but I'm not sure how light you could build one of these up - they're not massively light so if you're after a weight weenie build then there are other frames out there.
It takes a fair bit of stick though, I took mine down the Jump gully in Swinley and the pump tracks at Lee Quarry last week and its not broken (yet). I've only run mine with (twisted) 100mm forks on (and rigids) but it seemed as good as any other xc hardtail across the rough stuff.
I'm having slightly dirty thoughts about building up a 16inch one as a 4x bike, but considering I've already got a 4x bike that I've never ridden it seems a bit wasteful...might just have a look at the on-one site now...just to check
I've had these for sale for a while and they are like new but I've also been thinking of building up a Whippet.

Well it's a 1300g frame, so theoretically it'd be a pound heavier than an identically specced Scale 899! Lightest I've weighed (with gears and bouncy bits) was Scott Forbes's one, with full XX, FRM finishing kit and DT190/Alpine wheels - that was 19.9lbs.
I'll get mine on the scales this weekend coming - I very much doubt I'm sub 20lbs now.
Has anyone had any problems with a creaking bottom bracket? Mine bb is new and creaks every time the power is put down. Help Please...
rocklobster - yep!!! Brand new BB, first ride, creaky as ****
has anyone had any problems fitting a 10speed shimano xt rear mech to a whippet
ive got a problem with it double shifting and all components are brand new
My wife has a 10spd XTR Shadow+ rear mech on hers and it setup and works fine.
Shameless plug, but i swapped mine for a dirty have and so have an XTR high direct mount front mech going for £35 posted if your interested 😉 was a good bike though, just really really wanted a 29er.

Problems/ Advice: Fitting the BB92 Bracket, its hard to do let them do it for you, its only £9.99! but fit the integrated headset thats EASY! save yourself the £9.99 there. Other problems I had was the Front derailer but that just takes time, longer than you think (well I am new to this). And well after the first attempt and fail at fitting the Bottom Bracket (BB92) the local shop did it for me for £20, So just get On One to do it, save time and ££.
Groupset Advice: On One only recomend the double chain sets (Shimano Hollowtech/2) but the triple DOES work, and no matter what anyone says you don't need to file the granny ring well at least on the SLX!
BB92 Advice: I used the SLX (M660 10 Speed Triple Chainset) in this case: You need to fit the 2.5mm spacer on the drive side and one 1mm spacer on the non drive.
Pictures May Follow……..
Just built one for my son
8.8kgs all in with pedals
Took some fettling to get 2x9 to work well on 24-36 rings
Small frame
Sid Rlt forks
Podium mmx rims
SRAM x0 mechs
Kcnc finishing kit
Hope race brakes
Xtr crank & pedals
JamieMac I am going to blatantly steal that big On One under down tube idea, it looks mint 🙂
SID RLT 100mm on mine ... just the job!
I've actually got two...
One's my race bike, yellow n green, xtr, SIDs, American classics. The other one is a white n red one built with rigid forks.
Very capable bikes, would heartily recommend, especially for the money.
I'll be flogging my Whippet this week if anyone's interested?
All Black with red accessories, will be posting pictures up as soon as I can.
Reba forks, all carbon, XT shifters and mechs, Charge Spoon Saddle, Tubeless Superstar Wheels etc, good spec.
Anyone interested my email address is jonnyhindley at hotmail dot co dot uk
Hi, any comments on the quality of the finish? Have seen a couple of issues on other forums commenting on deformed tubes and poor lacquer finish?
Also, this is going to be used for long SDW rides if I decide on it and there are some rather rough, rocky, bumpy downs which will give it a clattering.
Cheers
John
I rode the SDW on the missus' On One and it was fine. Only problem was with the Rebas clogging up due to clearance and wet chalk in the rain, but narrower tyres would fix that (I had 2.25" ones on).
Took it to Wales a couple of times. It rides fine there.
She took it to Aston Hill once. It was fine on the Red run and the XC trail. She got halfway down the black DH run and decided to call it a day though. More a confidence thing than what the bike's capable of I reckon.
Some forks with more clearance would be ideal. But I quite like the 100mm travel. Makes you feel more connected to the trail I think.
Thanks cy
You're welcome.
Finish quality has been fine too. Don't forget to fit a chainstay protector if you get one. Hers didn't come with one fitted and it didn't half clatter on the first ride.
A trusty old inner tube will do the trick, thanks for the tip. Just need to find a second hand frame now as they don't have a subtle colour left in stock.

See text from http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FROOCWH/on_one_carbon_xc_whippet_frame :
"The following Mechs need a 1mm washer between the HDM plate and the mech: Shimano FD-M771-D (XT) 9 speed".
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hello friends,
I have recently bought the Carbon Whippet frame from On-One and I am not sure about the shape (and where I could buy the washer) of the 1 mm washer necessary for the front mech Shimano FD-M661-D (SLX) 9 speed .
Could you please help me ?
Thank you in advance for you help.
Best regards
Zdenek Bartos,
I have received the answer via http://customerservice.planetx.co.uk/index.php?/ today, after eight days of waiting.
The answer is: "This only applied to the older version of the Whippet frame, the newer version (which has a steel High direct mount plate instead of carbon) does not need a washer.
Kind Regards, Jamie."
