Anyone have any ideas about age or provenance? It has been given to my father in law to fix up.

Seemingly no real manufacture marks on it (bar what looks like a frame number on one BB shell and same no. on dropout). Even derailleur is no name.

Rear chainstay yoke looks a bit Claud Butler, but could be totally wrong about that. Got a pic of the frame number? I've got an USWB CB frame in the shop, might be a way to compare.

Those hubs are ace ๐Ÿ˜€

I had one very similar, never found out what it was though ๐Ÿ™

You may wish to add more brakes!

It proved a giggle in alp du Nottinghamshire, I suspect a proper hill will prove 'entertaining'. ๐Ÿ˜†

Frame No. is M163

Wow! That's uncanny, I was given one almost exactly the same a few years ago. Same colour, chain set, gears but different bars and hubs.
I got it off a retired minister who bought it in the early sixties. It was reenammeled before he got it so I guess it was made some time in the fifties.
It's a Dawes.
It's a tragedy that grease nipples used to be put on bikes but are no longer.

I got a schauff one off eBay and gave the Dawes to a pal.

Well the rear cranks are from a Raleigh judging from the 'R' on the cotter pin.
I have a old Ellsworth ladies bike which has very similar lugs, might be worth looking on Google images at various tandems from Raleigh, Ellsworth,CB, Carlton etc and see if anything looks similar.

Edit: looks very similar to this old Raleigh Tandem, headtube, lugs, seatclamps and pump pegs all look the same, although the fork appears to be different.

Lugs look very similar to an old Charter Lea. Hanger's obviously a retro-fit.

Might I suggest some new jockey wheels?
