OS maps. I figured it would be simple. New to the area, and only just got round to actually looking at some to buy...

Those 3 do the area quite well.

But hold on, on several rides I will need to take all 3 with me, that's no good..

Centred maps eh? Seems good.

*Spends a few hours playing around centring maps*

Still need 3 to cover the whole area, but at least now I don't need to take more then 1 on a ride.

And this waterproofing thing sounds like a good idea..

And so now it looks like I'm going to be spending £54 instead of £14, and I'm still only getting 3 maps.

Maybe I should just carry all 3 maps with me and buy a new tyre or something..

And this is just the landranger maps for road, I haven't even looked at the explorer ones for mtb..

You can download the whole of the UK at 1:50k for around £62. Just print off what you need and stick it in an Ortlieb mapcase.

That's why I bought Tracklogs.
And then gave up and just followed people who know where they're going. 🙂

If you have something like an iphone you can download your own custom OS maps from memory map. You dont need a signal to use them, and although it has it's limits and its not as nice to hold / use as a real map: I like it for £12.50 (for up to 25,000 sqkm at 1:50K from anywhere in GB or up to 750 sqkm at 1:25K from anywhere in GB)

Edit: as a guide I used about half of my 750 sqkm downloading the tweed valley bits I'm interested in. I'm keeping the rest til there's somewhere I need it for.

I guess he means that the small screen size of an iphone or similar makes it hard to plan longer routes because you only see a relatively small section of the map at any one time and when you zoom out far enough to see a wider area, it's unusable. Whereas planning a long route on a paper map, you'd just spread it out on the table. Less of an issue if you know the area already but awkward if you don't.

I'd also say that I think ViewRanger is probably the pick of the phone mapping applications if you are going to do something along those lines.

So I started today by looking at OS maps. Now I'm looking at iPhone contracts.

What is wrong with me?

What do you mean

Screen size and battery life/ charging. Tbh I wouldn't buy the phone just for maps.

Well I'm coming to the end of my contract anyway, and my old nokia is just not quite as good at wasting my time like my friends iphones.

Maybe just an ipod touch then, although I figured it might be worth it to just go for a iphone instead.

Well that sounds like a good enough excuse to me!

Sent from my iPhone. 😉

A smartphone doesn't replace a map.

+1

don't bother with waterproofing. keep them in a carrier bag and they'll be reet.

Indeed - clear A4 ziplock bags available, which are far less bulky than a mapcase. Though if I'm really bothered about water (ie I'm taking maps kayaking) I'll laminate them.
