Will a 9sp front mech work with 7sp, or is it to narrow? (I imagine it is)
Chains. 7sp & 8sp are the same chain aren't they? So, will an 8sp powerlink work on a 7sp chain? (I think it will)

Yes, 7/8 speed chains are exactly the same, the 9 speed front mech will work, depending on the bike/chain line etc you may get a little bit of cage rub at the extremes.
