Had the pleasure of hearing a nightjar last night as a mate and I rode across Puttenham Common. Very distinctive sound often likened to a sewing maching! Anyone else experienced this?

No, but have an interest in this type of bird - HP Lovecraft fans take note.

Amazing sound isn't it... Used get this on rides where you stayed out just to chase the sunset home (still do occasionally). Sounds a bit like some weird techno/303 filters when a few of them start up. It's worth hanging around after dark to watch them fly- they move around in the air like they're being manipulated on wires, pretty strange and interesting animals ๐Ÿ™‚

I love nightjars. They are supposed to be making a comeback on Leith Hill. Anybody seen or heard them up there?

Saw them once when we specifically went looking. Wandered round like loonies waving white hankies - worked though!
Amazing sound, and most satisfying to hear it on Puttenham Common as it was previously thought they had disappeared completely from here.
