O.k the problem i have got is, that i have just taken out my old gas fire in readiness for the new wood burner and i now find that my existing hearth and fireplace is a marble compound and it doesn,t meet manufactures regs.
i don't want to renew the whole lot as i have just purchased the stove to go into the 16 inch opening. HELP !
Marble compound? Like a plastic type compound?
Probably gonna have to change it and flog it on
overlay with slate tiles ?
I did think of that. I am wondering exactly how hot does the casing gets on a wood burning stove as its only gonna be used as a secondary heating in my main lounge when it really gets cold
depends on how much and what you are burning in it. I had singed some chunks of wood I had on top of mine yesterday which were drying out, so probably fairly hot.
do the job right, you are quite literally playing with fire
You need to do it properly.
Don't even think about it mate! The whole idea of the stove is that it uses it's own body to send the heat into the room rather than up the chimney, hence it gets ****in hot!! Mine has cracked all the plaster on the inside cheeks of the fireplace so beware. Also if you're fitting yourself you need to do it right as you won't have a hetas certificate on completion!
Only reason I mention this is because, if your new fire is deemed to have caused any problems in your house, ie burnt carpet or in the extreme case a chimney fire, your home insuranse Will Not be valid!!
Happy burning.
My old wood burner was fitted into the original builders opening, the recess was tiled on all sides and a slate tiled hearth was fitted never had any problems. But as mentioned well worth checking out the local regs and getting advice from a decent installer /shop
