My son can go his Cnoc 14 as of yesterday. Three years 3 months and 28 days (but who's counting) and he rode it for about 1k.

That'll do

I've waited a long time for Jnr to get into it - he's just not physical or co-ordinated (gets it from his Dad, obviously), but this years project was to get him riding before he turned 6 in July - and we just about did it.

Then had a couple of months when the weather and holidays got in the way, and he seemed to think riding a bike was something you did in a carpark to impress grandparents.

Took him out on the local Sustrans route today, he did a couple of flat easy miles and you could see the light go on - a bike is about freedom and opportunities - no idea why I hadn't got this across to him before.

He's already figured out that if he practices and can ride 5 miles, we could meet his mum and sister at the cafe in the country park.

Treated him to a cool new helmet afterwards - no cartoon pictures on this boys skid lid any more, proper fitting, proper looking, with a cool flashing red light at the back!

Trying to think what other kit he "needs" so we can have proper father/son time in the LBS.....

That's pretty good. My boy couldn't manage it until he'd just turned 4.

Does pretty long rides with me every weekend now.

Swadey - let me show you a very bad website - your wallet may mysteriously empty itself or you may use it as "I know it exists" info when you go to the LBS.

That's their toddler page (which appears to go to age 9 - bid toddler) but they also have a youth page. The notocross stuff is better than the mountain bike stuff - but a lot of it is equally appropriate.

Scott - he's been on the back of my bike since he could hold his head up in a helmet, on a LOCT on the fron of my bike since he was 2 & 1/2 and on a Rothan rom 18 months. Three weeks ago he was on the red Chavannes downhill (I forget the exact name) at Les Gets (on his LOCT on my Five). Hothousing clearly works.

He now tells his mother off if she's too timid through skills areas or bombholes.

Thankfully he's quite happy with his "just about small enough" Aldi gloves! LOL
