Looking for a new steel hardtail, but get confused by all the marketing blurb out there. So what's good, and what's not good? Just need the frame as I'll be stripping my present alu frame down. Large size as I'm 6' 2".

Doesn't have to be "niche" or "cool". Doesn't have to be a nice colour, but preferably not black or pink!

Any suggestions for a normal XC type of rider who doesn't do fancy tricks, jumps or drop offs? Should be comfortable for 4/5 hour rides.

Could be. I'm not in any particular hurry.

Merlin Malt?

Available in 3 flavours depending on wallet. Lightweight, Alu, takes 100mm forks, rides well. I've done Dyfi Enduro, Mayhem and SITS this year, plus a on of local Mid Wales weekly night riding and weekend runs on my Malt 2 and it's taken it all within it's stride.

Oops sorry, missed the STEEL keyword in your OP. Ignore the Malt then 🙂

Like the look of the P7, Soul and maybe Rock Lobster. But....

what are these Blue Pigs like? Anyone any experience with one?

Decisions, decisions!

If you don't GAS about niche or cool then you've gotta be looking at some flavour of On One I would think

But don't they have a bit of a twitchy back end?

Not at all. And I'm a big lump, without lashings of skill. Tend to bully my way over stuff and the HJ copes with it no worries.

|Oh go on, someone has to say it, Prince Albert?

Love mine to bits. Broke my (rather twitchy) Handjob to bits previously.

Just like me! I'll add it to the list.

Spaceman - If you rode it within its intended purpose you must have been unlucky to break a HJ surely, plus IMHO this bike doesn't suffer to much flex in the back end. For some reason I've always been heavy with kit since a kid and I've yet to damage the frame.
