Just updating an ongoing thread really! Whats anyones thoughts? Both the same price - 60quid and the xtr is supposedly immaculate. 2yrs old. Any other choices around that sort of price?
Im finding it hard to decide!

Go s/h XTR and expect to need new rings, consequently buy SLX/XT new...

XTR 960 is a pain due to weird BCD. Makes buying new rings an expensive pain.

Think 960 is a 104 bcd. Fsa do 104s for 18quid. Wonder if they would work with it? 60quid makes it pretty disposable if the rings cant be bought cheap though. And then yeah - back to slx.

960 is non standard - 102 for the middle.

102 for the middle.

He's right. TA did the Sismic series of rings, Boone did some, and Middleburn do them, but it's hard to get anything other than the standard 22(or 24)/32/44.

The M960 must be NOS at 2 years old, they were discontinued in 2007.

If the rings are good, and you have no aspirations to go single or double on the front I'd get the M960. If you need to budget for new rings, or you do want double or single. I'd get SLX, although I realise that's a bit more.

Thanks for all the advice! Theres another couple of custom made options as well such as homebrewed. Prices are ok. Gonna go see it tonight. No doubt you shall all await my decision with baited breath. Thanks again.

Ah yes, forgot HBC, they weren't around when I was looking!

They'll look rubbish SS anyway, unless you a Jones on them - as the spider extends beyond the middle ring.

I'd jones mine and get some HBC rings if I trusted my abilities with an angle grinder... which I don't 🙁

Few pics here. Sure there are better guides out there if you google jones, xtr and 960.

Heresay! By all the gods what has he done! Aaaargh! Single speed. The devil himself rides singlespeed and bores gear ratios into my soul. Never I tell you.
thanks for the link but my patriotand my piss poor fitness levels would never allow ss!

sorry to ask again bigthunder but I would buy the cranks if they're still available.

bigthunder, would be running them 1x10 here, more than enough gears for an mtb.

Bought the xtr chainset. Rings are good with not much wear at all and the middle has been changed out for a middleburn. All in all pretty pleased with it. Gets dropped into Bike works tomorrow for professional fitting. Came with a bb as well so I think Ive done quite well for 60quid. 12 to fit.

Sorry mrblobby that was a terrible(and stupid) assumption to make. 1x10 would be good but not for my levels of fitness! Like my granny ring too much!
