Another newby question, I have just bought some padded lycra shorts from Decathlon do I wear anything under them?
Dave
No, commando all the way. And consider also some Bum Butter or similar as anti-friction.
No.
Absolutely no underwear under padded shorts...as mentioned above, wash after every use and they'll be good.
You might want to wear something over them at this time of year
Thanks I didn't want to make a faux pas, I'll certainly be wearing something over them.
Not underpants...that would just be properly weird...unless you are Coleman from Mint Sauce!
Underwear would chafe and bunch up so as above they are designed to be worn next to the skin.
Commando
G-String, or budgie smugglers, try to choose a darker colour if possible.
It's not really a faux-pas in the sense of having VPL under your cycling lycra or the like, it's actually the practicality of the seams of your undercrackers or bunched up boxer short cotton being likely to rub. Nowadays we do have lots of other materials and constructions for our kecks, seamless modal, etc., so might be less of an issue but still better to be without as that's what they've evolved for.
In fact we talk about padded undershorts but actually the padding is secondary, the main function of the chammy (which is not even chammy anymore, will be a synthetic) is to be a fitted, seamless pad that won't bunch or rub. Once your arse toughens up (your sit bones really) then you may find that actually less is more and minimal padding is more comfortable because there's less material to bunch and rub. But that's experience and a bit of trial and error to get to know the sort of pad that suits you.
There really are some strange people on here. Inside out then back to front at least before you wash them. Won’t someone please think of the planet?
Now there’s someone with my kinda thinking
still good to go if they stick to the wall
hear here mr @reeksy
Point of information. Never back to front. Brings the E. coli and klebsiella close to the entry point for a complicated UTI. And you don't want one of those- trust me! Inside out? Standard procedure.
To the OP, a good dab of cream or something thicker in the creases in the crotch helps with friction. Assos make a nice tub. you don’t need much.
Do you put the cream on the pad or on your skin? The latter seems much more effective.
Though speaking of inside out, the pad goes on the inside as I'm sure you are aware.
My mate insists on wearing boxers under his ! 😳😳😳😳😳
Skin. Slip it down into the creases after the last minute trip to the little boys room. The pot lives on top of the downstairs toilet.

not to be confused with the toothpaste…
Ah, the joy of the first time you ever put on Assos cream
It’s not commando, those padded inners are your underwear.
I’ve never used cream as I’ve never had chafing. Only use pads if it’s a day long ride or unusually hot otherwise Howies tencel undies do fine.
Not everyone gets on well with chamois cream. I used to be a habitual user but the situation down there significantly improved when I stopped. I'd say it's worth trying without it then get some if you find chafing.

Nah, we don’t have a cat. Assos cream really is excellent. Used sparingly it works. I’ve not tested it on the dog though.
All depends how long you ride for I suppose. I never ride more than 2 hours at a time so have never felt the need for any cream as don't have any problems that would require it.
Fairly recent convert to MucOff's minty arse lard, and it does make a difference on longer outings.
Have to be a bit careful not to cross contaminate the pot with those e-coli and klebsiella if your applying straight to your crack and crevices tho. Applying to pad makes it a little easier

Never double dip 🙂
I thought were all using Double base as it work far better than expensive creams*? (sudocrem is not great for this application)
It took ages to convince some of my friends that cycling short with a chamois only, no undercrackers required!

If you're planning on riding any distance and they're new wash before wearing. The only time bib-shorts gave me problems was a 50 mile ride in brand new ones.
sudocrem is not great for this application
My mention of Sudocrem earlier was not intended as a chammy cream replacement but as an after ride treatment if required.
stw in violent agreement...<br />briefs for me, never found any padded shorts with sufficient control.

You get loads of control with Lycra.
